The future of energy. A good watch for anyone with energy in their portfolio.
That was interesting, but they seem to be make a lot of assumptions that I don't get. Utilities have always had issues in investing in new tech, due to their structure. That is definitely an issue but it's not because they are mispricing the assets.
I also don't see anyone trying to build new coal power plants or hydroelectric dams, do you? Then there is the issue of NIMBY which has always been an issue for Nuclear power but is also a big issue in Wind. If you have ever been near those windmills you can see why, they are ugly and really loud.
Hydro electric power is changing rapidly and becoming much more price competitive. Tidal power, micro hydra and submerged river turbines produce consistent, predictable power and have much less environmental impact. Obviously they are limited because you need water nearby, but they are a much better option where they are operable. Hydrogen is also very interesting.
As these systems become smaller and more price competitive I think you will see more industry and eventually residential move toward operating their own systems rather than relying on the grid. The grid is a mess for many reasons, and nobody at the federal level seems to be doing anything about it.
