Why is Rutgers paying such high salaries with high buyouts that no other program in the country wants?

An absolute disgrace. In no way shape or form should students be forced to pay into athletics with tuition add-ons nor should tax payers be covering the bill for college athletics nowadays with NIL. Either find another donor to cover the operating costs or make cuts to player salaries / cut sports. Ridiculous.

It's not just them, a lot of schools have revenue issues, us included. The piece that frustrates me is that we don't seem to take revenue generation seriously... though again I think that's something we're hardly alone with. I see athletic departments falling into 3 buckets.

1. The schools with brands so big that they print money with little little effort will maintain sustained success in the semi-pro era of college sports.

2. The schools that invest in rev gen now will be able to survive and generally keep up.

3. The schools that continue to view rev gen as a necessary inconvenience and allocate bare minimum resources to it will struggle mightily. Athletics being subsidized by other areas of the university will only be sustainable for so long.

Rutgers has a big hole to climb out of, but at least their new AD has the foresight to start moving from bucket 3 to bucket 2.

I’ve never understood the accounting of college athletic departments. How is this possible and keep afloat?

Exactly. It’s time colleges treat athletics what they really are. A business. Coaches and players get paid.

You can’t just keep it around because it’s a historical entity. Longtime businesses go belly up all the time.

Just wait until the NIL donors come asking for their share of the revenue. Photo ops and autographs and suites to games won’t satisfy them forever.

Public schools, and all Government jobs have never had any accountability. No matter what you do or delivery, you keep your job 99% of the time. Just keep spending what you don't have. This is how the federal government is close to 40 trillion in debt. What's NJ's liability to public workers, last I saw it was $80 Billion.
