Also, kudos to Steve Sauers who traveled in the ambulance with Pope.
BTW, a little trivia, Gonzo eventually tried to visit Pope a couple of days later in the hospital and was refused entrance into the room.

I spoke to Steve Sauers when he got out of the ambulance that night. He told me Grant saved Pope's life. That's where I am getting this info from.
Lol. My wife said that guy looks like he is on the 10 year college plan. I told her there are some guys on 8 years. Big part of what is wrong with college sports is right.
I knew the answer because you told that story in the past. It’s a great one and true testament to Grant.
The fan behavior was despicable. This was a major embarrassment for what is otherwise recognized as a fine Catholic institution. Powell should be suspended indefinitely and English should be publicly reprimanded. But then again he's likely to be fired in a month anyway. Jones should also get a suspension.

As bad as that was this was worse. Watch the slomo of the Powell foul and see how Hopkins' head was twisted.

Yes. BET semifinals. Was there. What a bonkers game that was.
Him having seniority or tenure or whatever you'd call it w/Big East refs is such garbage & hurts the league. The guy is easily the worst ref in the league, one of the worst in the country, and runs his games poorly, with an attitude & with "the slowest finger in the west" once it comes time to have to review anything. The fact that his games are usually the ones in the league with controversy is not a coincidence. How the league lets this go on year after year is bull_shit. He SUCKS. Marquette game during the BET is the most glaring example for us SHU fans, but there's countless others. I hope his pipes froze last weekend during the deep freeze.

The BE has a history of atrociously bad refs. Burr and Higgins and that Rutgers St Johns game in 2011 BET come to mind.

The foul was a thug move, done on purpose.
That was in my entire life the worst individual performance I have ever seen by a referee.
The Pirates were dominating the game, but late Breeding went whistle crazy with every single call going against the Pirates.
Marquette just had to throw the ball up and with no contact he kept calling a foul against the Hall.
It got so bad that Marquette had the ball down by only 2, 81-79 and Marcus Howard drove down the court and took a buzzer beater from the arc. I held my breath because Shavar Reynolds was guarding him and played his usual tight defense. And even though there was no contact Breeding was right there with the whistle in his mouth. If he blew it again I think the entire Pirate team would have run out on the court and sent him to Reffy heaven.
Afterwards, I spoke to Reynolds and jokingly said. "what the hell were you thinking" with a big smile on my face? He said I never touched him and I responded "I know, but did you trust Breeding to not make the call regardless?"
BTW, Reynolds was a great player to interview. Always smiling and never shied away from any question. Little wonder why everyone liked him.

Kim is overwhelmed up there. Is tough to do learning on the job in this era when you’re dealing with mercenaries and have a good budget fueling expectations. He’s still only 37 yo. He will learn from this experience.
Providence fan base are OK being 10 games under .500 if they beat Cooley or Hopkins. The continued obsession with those two things is bizarre. In many ways, our fam base showed great class in rhe Richmond departure. Now, Hopkins took money for a year of rehab and then left, so his departure was more difficult. However, Richmond meant much more to our ability to compete.

Just pray that Breeding is not reffing today's game with Butler! He will wear out his whistle in his next game.

Agreed. I don’t know much of this guys background, except I recall him being a hard-nosed, highly competitive player for either Haith or Anderson (I think) at Missouri, who played himself into a second round pick. Has risen up the coaching ranks quickly. Seem to be well regarded.
Like Sha, he inherited a rebuilt program that lived in the NCAA tournament. I’d argue his circumstances were both easier and more challenging at the same time. On the one hand, Providence has a far bigger passionate and die hard fan base with student support than we do, and by all accounts more resources for NIL. On the other, he isn’t a Prov alum so he doesn’t get the love or benefit of the doubt that Sha gets from us diehards because of what he did as a player. And just dealing with the Cooley scenario itself no doubt has challenges.
Having see all the clips and articles about this, what seems most egregious is how he lost control AFTER the dirty play by Powell.
Powell was ejected immediately. So how the hell are you allowing him to stay on the court for 20 minutes to incite things, rile everyone up and get your moron fans to start chanting his name? If he’s throw out right away, which he was, get him off the floor.
Then the kid Jones - who is a really good looking young talent - commits a dumb foul out of frustration on the best player in the league which was pretty dangerous in and of itself. If Zuby gets hurt on that play, can you imagine where this story goes? I don’t think Jones was trying to hurt him, but it looks horrible given the context.
Then his press conference wasn’t exactly a model on how to handle the situation.
When the arena turns into the Roman Colliseum, get on the mic and tell people to chill the F out.
Ugh...there should be a rule that a ref can't referee the game between the same two teams in the same year.
I’m not defending PC fans but I would argue Hopkins’ departure was more painful and more detrimental to PC than Kadary was to SHU. With Kadary, by Pitino’s own admission, his departure could be blamed on SHU’s lack of resources. With Hopkins, you know PC has money so you can’t say that. PC could have made a competitive offer and Hopkins decided (perhaps early on last season) that he’d rather play for another school.
When Hopkins got hurt at SHU two years ago Providence was ranked and was very-possibly Tournament bound. They never recovered.
On paper PC is a pretty good job despite their insane fans. There are resources, facilities, you’re the #1 show in town, you don’t have to compete with football, and your building is packed more often than not. With all of that, the program’s coach (who is from there) and their star player bolt for other schools in-conference. That has to stick in the craw in their fans and it’s something the administration there has to take a hard look at if they want to get the next hire right.
The issue with Hopkins was that he got $800K last year and only played in three games, because they felt he refused to otherwise play.
Similar thing going on now with Edwards up there too it seems. Whether it is real or not who knows but English’s comments in the press conference above was similarly odd and deer in headlights as Sha with Richmond.
Btw I have no clue if the Prov fans assumptions are even remotely accurate here about their players who got paid and then miss games while they recover. I made a lot of assumptions and had opinions about the Kadary-stuff which in retrospect was dead, dead wrong.
Not condoning Powell antics at all but you could sense PC & their fans frustration at how the game was being called. St John’s fouls so much both on & off the ball yet somehow always seem to get a favorable whistle. As far as Powell, he should be suspended for the rest of the season for his horse collar & antics afterwords.
SJU plays defense like Seton Hall. We are similar from a metrics perspective (UCONN slightly better than both). UCONN has had a foul trouble issues all year, which Hurley says along with TOs are its two biggest problems. I don't think it is because Danny Hurley doesn't get calls -- no one works the refs more -- it's because of their personnel playing that type of defense and doing more things that are going to generate calls. I don't know if the statistics back it up, but my impression is that both us and SJU tend to get called for fouls less than UCONN, even though all of us are rated pretty similarly on the defensive end. I think it is probably more likely that we and SJU just know how to defend that way without doing things that are going to generate as many whistles, game in, game out (although the wrong crew causes problems for teams that defend this way, whether during the regular season or the NCAA tournament -- see Bob Huggin's teams for basically his whole career).
Sha's played this way defensively his whole coaching tenure, and Pitino basically has as well, at least from what I can recall. Other teams fans complain about it, and both McDermott and Hurley complained to the Big East after they played us. I don't think it is a favoritism thing at all though.
