The system needs to be indicted. Bad cops are protected by the system. So-called good cops nearly universally cover for bad cops. We train our police like they're going into a war zone, train them in force escalation and teach them to always be afraid (despite police not having a particularly dangerous job, and roughly 50 cops being murdered per year out of 800,000 sworn officers working out to a rate 50% higher than the general population) and neglect deescalation and peaceful resolution of situations. This isn't just a "bad cop" problem. We have a widespread systematic policing problem. Just look at this example - this cop in this video wasn't some cold blooded killer who wanted to murder somebody. He freaked out and fired and was clearly distraught afterward.
I agree. These cops are not to be excused but they could very well be the victims of poor training and oversight. They are definately not acting like "peace officers". They are acting like amped up soldiers on the battlefield and not like police in a community.

If the victim had been white no one would have said a word about it. That's how little white lives matter in this world now.

It was caught on video, so it would've been a big deal anyway. It's way bigger because the victim was black and on the heels of another unnecessary killing of a black man.

If a cop does wrong and a camera captures the wrongdoing, then it becomes a story.

And if you don't get that "Black Lives Matter" really means "Black Lives Matter, too" then I don't know what to tell you. It's not about saying white lives or police lives don't matter. It's about not having to be scared of losing your life from law enforcement or anyone else simply because of the color of your skin. That **** is really happening today in 2016, and if you don't see it, you aren't looking hard or unbiased enough.

Because Sterling was pointing his gun at a patron, he refused the police orders to get down, he was tazed, and he had an illegal fire arm in his pocket, one of the cops yelled he has a gun, we can't see his arm while he's resisting, and I still don't know if the cop was in the right, but I'm damn sure not willing to call it murder at this point.

As for the Minnesota shooting, I don't know if the cop was justified or not, it appears MUCH worse than Baton Rouge. Then again all we have is the aftermath with a lady filming while her boyfriend is dying and a child in the backseat, how quickly we forget the hands up don't shoot garbage that Brown's buddy ran, and told the media right afterwards. It was a lie, so maybe before anyone gets their panties in a wad, maybe we should let due diligence play out.

Or maybe the cops could stop acting as judge, jury, and executioner and do the same....

I'd also make the argument, that in those 3 situations, the officer WAS protecting the 3 individuals, while probably also making sure he can get another coffee/donut run in.. I don't see the issue with that. Of the 7 billion people, how many do things with someone else's well being in mind, over their own?

Garner a lot of these cops are in WAR ZONES. Some of you don't get how dangerous these criminals and ghettos are.
That's BS there are police that work in these communities that do not escalate situation into corpses every dang day. This is not a problem with the entire police force throughout the country except for the protection they all receive from each other warranted or not.

And before we get the same people saying more white people are killed by cops:

Obviously, some people don't understand statistics. That would be because white people make up 80% (250 million) of the entire population while African Americans make up 13% (35 million)....nearly 8x less... that 13% makes up nearly 51% of all police brutality deaths. That's insane. So what that means is for every white person being killed by cops, there are 5-7 blacks being killed at a higher frequency rate. If you fail to see the disproportionality in that, i have nothing to say to you.

Oh no buddy, it's you that couldn't grasp a simple stats course if it smacked you in the face.

The stats show there is NO issue with police killing black men. None.

Go ahead, research.

Both you and Ganner are honing in exactly on what the problem is. I just hope there are clear minded people that can also see what the true root cause of this systemic problem is and address it meaningfully but both you guys are spot-on in this thread.

Wow Bill, your son one of those cops that shot the guy while he was pinned to the ground yesterday?

Of course, I mean why else would I resort to logic instead of instinctually assuming the cop killed the guy in cold blood?

If you have a weapon that you brandished at someone, have it concealed, refuse the cops orders, and then resist there's a good all of us posting right now would be killed by the police as well. They have the ability to use deadly force, does that mean it's always justified, no. The cop in South Carolina clearly murdered that suspect who was no threat to him.

Better yet why don't we demand that from people with badges and guns ending citizens lives.

Obviously the same advise applies to everyone - if you're stopped, cooperate, show your hands. I'm a white guy and when I was young, I had a police office pull a gun on me once on a route traffic stop becasue I (stupidly) jumped out of the car fast and turned towards him. But it's the AA community that is in focus here as it seems most often they are the victims in these situations.

Ok. My next question is, if it seems AA folks are the victims in this situation more often, what is the reason for this? Do we put the whole onus on AA folks to "comply" or do we put the ball in the officers court since they are the "authority" figures.

Legal terms.

Prosecutor: Why did you shoot the suspect?
Cop: he had a gun.
Prosecutor: Were you fearful for your life?
Cop: yes.
Prosecutor: So you were fearful and you shot the suspect?
Cop: yes.
Prosecutor: How about after you shot him once?
Cop: yes.
Prosecutor: Twice. You shot him twice. Are you still fearful? Reasonably with two cops on top of a suspect you have shot at point blank range twice in the chest and you are still reasonably fearful of your life?
Cop: yes.
Prosecutor: So you shoot him a third time? And that wasn't enough to restrain the suspect that was selling the CDs in front of the store?
Cop: yes.
Prosecutor: So it wasn't until you shot the suspect a fourth time at point blank range in the chest with another police officer on top of the suspect that you felt reasonably safe from harm?

Cop is going to get taken apart on the witness stand.

That was pretty good. Do the part about the suspect being a felon with a concealed gun in a open carry state, don't leave out the suspects history including resisting arrest.

At the end of the day, I guess I'll keep living my life doing the right thing, obeying laws, not doing drugs, working hard in a great job that affords me many opportunities and income, and obeying the police when told to do something on the street. I'm accountable for my own actions and I don't blame bad outcomes on bad luck or playing the victim card. If that makes me white, so be it.

I'll raise my kids to do the exact same thing and hope they have similar success through hard work and always doing the right thing. But they'll also understand doing the wrong thing has consequences and it will never be anyone's fault but their own. Not sure why this is hard to grasp.

I grew up lower middle class and paid my way through school and got my job by busting my *** and constantly providing results to get the next great job. not sure what this white privilege is I keep hearing about but I'd like to try some if anyone knows where I can get some.

Look man, The dude in Louisiana had been reported for brandishing his weapon, he then refused the police commands, keep in mind the cops know that he has already pulled his gun, first they taze him, then fight with him. We know the one cop yells he has a gun, we can't make out his arm that is free ON THE SIDE THE GUN IS, what I'm saying is before we rush to judgement and have riots lets find out what really happened.

It may turn out the one cop was simply yelling to his partner to remind him he had a weapon and that cop misunderstood him and killed him thinking he had drawn it, or it could be the man was actually trying to pull his weapon out.

I think I clearly stated in my post that careless or incompetent police work is part of this issue in many of these cases. Again I'm looking for solutions not blame.

Pretty racist of yourself to think all us Whites are from the burbs and country. I know quite a few posters, including myself, who spent time in some pretty awful areas... I'd bet a lot of money there's at least 10 of us whites who lived in worse places than you've ever visited..

By the way, you're officially the worst GD poster in 2016. Congrats. That really, truly, says something..

Just GD do what the police tell you to do, and 99.9% of the time no one will get get hurt. When an injustice happens, deal with it. In the mean time, the black youth body count is piling up, just look at the mountain you can't miss it.

You are not allowed to fight with police. You must comply. The man shot inside his car is unfortunate. It really is, but even he was

1. In possession of an illegal weapon.
2. Failed to comply correctly.
3. Broke every rule of carrying a gun, not just by having dope, but by ignoring the rules gun owners are given during training.

He shouldn't have died. I don't think the guy should be policing and I'm sure he won't now. But sometimes there's not a criminal act, it's just unfortunate.

Do you know what constitutes brandishing a weapon? Dude could have simply raised his shirt up a little for whatever reason and if someone saw a gun that can be considered brandishing a weapon. Why they act o surprised if they knew he had a gun? You got two rather large cops pinning down Alton....come on man...you're reaching...

Care to explain those that were raised poor and black in those areas that actually make it out and do something productive with their lives? What separates them from those that don't make it out?

Not ignoring that fact but even if he tried to reach for his gun, there's no way he could pull it and do something without 2 cops having more than ample time to react in a non lethal way...or if need be, lethal. They jumped the gun, so to speak...

Just pointing out that you left out he as a convicted felon with a firearm, and wasn't even carrying the firearm in accordance with the states law. Non-lethal was attempted in two instances (taser, and physical restraint). There is more to this situation that hasn't and probably won't be made public.

I can't wait for police strikes in these areas. The body counts will triple. Just look at baltimore race pimps. That's what happens in black metro areas when the police say "screw it". They kill each other in record numbers and crime goes through the roof.

Just let blacks control their own areas, bring segregation into policing, and if they don't have enough to fill spots tough. Figure it out. I'm sure everything will be fine since white cops aren't there.

Come on cops. Do it. Show them the facts of life.

reminds me of "House of Cards". There was a scene where Frank Underwood was talking with a Native American.

"Like you, I came from nothing."

"Your idea of nothing, and mine, are totally different"

Yes he was an Indian and I totally got the quote wrong. Point remains.

You don't have a goddamn clue what the real problem is.... you think you know....you have your little numbers that you keep quoting that fit your little narrative. Doesn't mean you have an understanding.

I've been asked the the DOJ in KY and the governor himself to look at the numbers in this state....guess what we are seeing..... systematic racism. And not even just in the major cities where minorities are more prevalent.....one of the worst places so far is a small town... not Lexington, Louisville, Covington....

Without justification? So you think the cops should take a bullet if a guy that has refused an order, and has a weapon tries to grab it? Look, citizens have a responsibility in these situations too, you can't put it all on the cops when a dumbass who has a weapon acts like a fool.

The guy in Minnesota looks bad on the part of the cops, but again, we don't see the actions leading up to the shooting, just the aftermath. In the video she stated he was reaching for his ID, now she's saying he had his hands up.
