I've been doing a slow burn all weekend. The foul and free-throw disparity in favor of UConn was insane. Calling one of our players for travelling, nullifying a basket and a free throw opportunity in the first half when the SHU player was clearly bumped from behind which casued his feet to move also was nuts. The bogus foul on Bud during the last minute. The non-foul call on Bud when everyone in the Arena knew it was an intentional foul. This was probably our only shot that we had to make the Tournament and the refs handed Uconn the win. Disgusting!

Agree that we played well enough to win as the coach said "for 38 minutes." We missed an awful lot of shots at the end.

I think we played nearly as well as we can. I was really impressed by the play with all circumstances considered. And twice now we had Connecticut in the vice. Again there’s no way on Earth that UConn only committed 3 fouls in 19 minutes.

The turnovers were probably the only area we had an issue. Our closer blew the save, I guess. Some bad decisions.

Another area was the numerous fouls & rebounds we allowed as the shot clock was about to expire. I think it led to points for the Huskies every time.

This is a great point. There had to be 3-4 times as the SC was expiring.

Defensive rebounding has been a problem for us all season. We play hard defense and force a bad shot only to allow 2nd and 3rd chances. Frustrating.

Way to go batts.... I was just getting over it...... now I'm even more pissed than I was at game's end...... lol

I mentioned it in another post, but when I saw that Potter was one of the refs, I had a really bad feeling... doesn't he usually ref with Breeden's crew?

Clark did not touch Ball with 1 second on clock. Total BS bailout call.
Teams should be awarded for playing great defense not penalized
League officials know it but nothing they can do at this point. I doubt you’ll see these refs working the Big East tournament.

Defensive rebounding has been a problem for us all season. We play hard defense and force a bad shot only to allow 2nd and 3rd chances. Frustrating.
Our defense is excellent in so many categories but we have 4 areas of statistical weakness that have hurt us in key times. Most are a result of our defensive style. Always over-helping on penetration, playing aggressive and going for blocks and turnovers has a price.

1 - Defensive Rebounding (267th)

We give up Offensive Rebounds at a 32.2% clip which leads to 10.1 2nd chance points per game which accounts for 15.6% (255th) of our points allowed.

Part of this is we don't really have any true Forwards and we are a very small team. We are 341st in Average height. But its also our style of play. We are very aggressive in help defense and in attempting to challenge/block shots that often leave us out of position for defensive rebounds. We make teams work using an average of 18.3 seconds per possession, I think some players let up when the shot goes up.

2 - Free Throw Attempts per FG attempts (329th) 42.7%

We foul far too much. 291st in PFs per game and too many are shooting fouls, 22.3 FT attempts per game (274th). Fouls have cost us in several close games this year.

3 - 3 Point Attempts / FG Attempts (285th) 42.7% of FGs are 3pt Attempts

We allow too many quality looks from 3. We are good at harassing players inside the arc but often that comes at a cost of leaving someone open from 3. We were excellent vs UConn but we lost track of Karaban several times for back-breaking 3s.

4 - Assists per FGs Made (299th) 57.0% of FGs are assisted

This is another end result of our over-aggressive help defense. It leaves someone open and solid offensive teams who pass the ball can take advantage and burn us.

All indicators of being too aggressive towards the ball. It’s also led to some of the highest block and steal rates but the downside is this.

**We slide too much towards the ball to attack and leave our man which leads to open shots or reversals.

**We get in the air far too much, especially in the paint.

**We don’t box out. Everyone is trying to get the ball to push the other way.

But I’ll take it. It’s an elite defense. With an average offense this team is probably 22-7, 12-6 or better and we’re talking about where we’re playing in the NCAAT.

SHU is in the top 3 in the BE in fouling its opponents. It is the style of play, defense etc.. Blame the refs all you want but the DNA of this team is to play hard, and the fouls are often the result and show up not just in the UConn game but over the course of the season. Our opponents usually are fouled more, shoot more free throws and unfortunately for us are better at it.

UConn is 291st in FTA:FGA and 10/11 in conference games. Whatever they did in the second half to only commit 3 before the final minute needs to be emulated by The Hall. 👍

In response to point #3

we only allow our conference opponents to shoot 31.8% from 3. 2nd best in the conference.

Are we really surrendering that may quality looks from 3?

plus you have to tip your cap to Karaban, those 3s were not stationary they were coming hard off picks and deep threes to boot. They made 5 threes to assist in their comeback and they were all clutch.

Actually, it was smart to have him shoot them as we had no one to guard him that was as tall so he had good looks shooting over anyone guarding him! He had mismatches all night. Come on he is 6'8" or more and we have guys that are 6'6' at best guarding him and then on switches 6'2"

Aside from Hines, I don’t think people appreciate how small we are at every position.
