Would it surprise any of you to know that we have over 60 individuals making six figures or more in our athletic department?

Not surprised at all, $100k isn't what it used to be, even in Starkville.
What web site shows this information? I know that this is public information, but the most recent data I have seen shows up to 2023.
I believe that I counted 216 not counting GAs or vacant positions
Speaking of vacant positions, that's another interesting area in the budget because I guarantee that there are more than a few of those that we have no intention of filling. Just seems like a good way to budget money for one thing and then use it elsewhere

Maybe, maybe not. Guess it depends on how in line it is with everywhere else. And if it is, I don't really have a problem with that face by itself. It's well known I don't care for Selmon, but he's an AD at an SEC school, his salary is what it is. We hired him.
It's always fascinated me that certain white collar positions like these, other public sector jobs, preachers, school administrators, etc. are scrutinized so heavily, simply because their salary comes from donations or taxes or whatever. How do you know they aren't great at their job? Unless it's egregious (like the Birmingham airport director 10 years or so ago, that was making double the salary of ATL's director), I don't see a problem. They are working a job, not up to me to tell them how much they are worth.
Seems like there is just so much jealousy out there because I guess that many of these salaries are somewhat public. I bet if many private company salaries were public, you'd see the same thing. Human nature I suppose. But nobody cares about the lesser paid positions. And especially in MS, we have this 'cut, cut, cut and save money' mentality about the dumbest things......like these people's jobs. At least they are working and paying taxes. There's a 100 other areas of bad spending, in all kinds of areas, that could be cut and save waaaaay more than cutting a few people's livelihood.

Honestly 60/216 doesn't sound that out of whack to me esp if you include coaches.
All big universities are full of bloat and graft. Redundant administration with a gazillion “Vice Presidents”. That’s why all the students have to go in debt. Scam.
45,000,000 divided by 261 is $174,000 each
take out head coaches for football baseball basketball and AD and OC and DC and it’s about $141;000
that goes down more when you fact in other football coaches making $250,000 and basketball assistants
and that also includes fringe benefits
I grew up thinking that if I ever won a million dollars or somehow saved a million dollars that I’d be set for life. Probably one of the most disappointing days of my life when I realized a million dollars isn’t really that much money anymore.
That’s not crazy. A ton of working professionals make over 100k now a days. I’m actually kind of shocked it’s not more. I’d be interested to see what the positions are. Could be a lot of GAs and interns that are under 100k.
That isnt why students have to go into debt. Staff salary is obviously one cost that tuition covers, but it is not THE reason why students have to go into debt.
I can see the perspective that it is jealousy which drives such concern, but I can also see the perspective that it is simply ensuring you are paid your value.
Sunshine being cast on compensation(not just pay, but total comp packages) in corporate/office jobs has been a game changer for employees.
The flipside is its been a headache for HR/T&P/Management, but this is all largely on them.
Tiresome. Take an obvious truth and say well that isnt true in .1% of the cases so we cant accept reality here. Boring
How many of them are on the offense vs defense? We’ve got to spend more on the defensive side of the ball.
“Live off the interest” was a great idea during the Reagan years when a savings account interest rate was 7%-9%, so a million dollars was like $80,000 per year and a decent sized home was less than most new vehicles today.
If its 10% of the overall reasons, then its a small part of the reasons for students having to go into debt.
Is it 1%? Is it 5%? Is it 15%?
It sure as 17 isnt 100%.

Well, if you assume that every football & men's basketball HC and Asst is on that list, plus all of the head coaches and most of the other Assistants, plus the Top 20 in administration, it doesn't seem that far fetched.
Is six figures "a lot" these days? I would need to know total number employed to have any idea if that seems skewed.
Yeah, but the mortgage rates were over 10% too. We had a 75th anniversary slideshow at a CU where I worked and this was a couple of years removed from the housing collapse so mortgage rates were sub 5 and CD rates were sub 3. A big portion of employees are under 30 so didn’t really have a concept of 80’s rates. They flashed a pic of a CD promo flyer for 13% and the crowd oohed. Then they showed the 21% mortgage flyer and there was an audible gasp.

I'd guess they have so many folks wanting to work there (for a variety of reasons) that they don't have to pay a lot of those jobs what they'd make in private sector
Lots of them get augmented by the BDC. I believe that's just what the state pays them.
I wish I got ahold of Fish's $$$, but know of a number of "kids" in their late 20's that are very close if not just over $100k already. They are all in different job roles and different industries.
I would still take a million, just in case you win it and find that it complicates your taxes.
Just FYI, 44% of the athletic department's 2025 budget is allocated to salaries and employee benefits or about $45 million. That averages out to $204K per employee ( if 216 is correct). That's pretty high for any organization public or private but the sports industry is a whole different world. BTW, 2025 calls for a $4 - 5 million budget surplus.

Especially more offensive is to live in a town without allure and near nothing - and that includes the university
So you need to BRIBE people with a high salary to even consider the place seriously
