A fourth-quarter game is brewing in South Bend. Notre Dame currently holds a three-point lead on Texas A&M, one where quarterback Marcel Reed is thriving. However, a play early in the final frame saw him go down with an injury, leave the game, and enter the medical tent.

Reed got hit right in the shoulder on a play where he was looking to scramble. Trainers sprinted on the field to check on him after he had gone down, spending some time on the field. When the NBC broadcast came back from commercial, Reed got shown going into the tent.

At the same time, the officiating crew confirmed a targeting call on Notre Dame’s Adon Shuler. Marcus Freeman did not agree with the decision, nor did officiating expert Terry McCauley. He explained why targeting should not have been called on Shuler.

“Yeah, I don’t really see it that way,” McCauley said on NBC. “He does lower his head, he does lead with the crown, he’s defenseless. But you have to have clear and obvious evidence that he make forceable contact with that six-inch radius at the top of his helmet. Certainly, there is contact with the helmet. It’s just not clear and obvious to me. It’s supposed to be for them to create targeting. I don’t think they should have.”

With the targeting rule, Shuler is now ejected for the rest of this game. Notre Dame will also walk onto the field next Saturday against Purdue without Shuler for the first half. So, a massive call for the Irish in both the short and long term.

Texas A&M quarterback Marcel Reed leaves Notre Dame game for short time

Turns out, the injury for Reed turned out not to be too bad. Miles O’Neill is Texas A&M’s quarterback and wound up only being out there for one play. Reed instantly called him off the field and took back over the Aggies’ offense. A sign of the toughness Reed possesses, looking to earn a massive win for the program.

Some work will need to be done in order to get over the finish line. Texas A&M is hoping to break a long drought against ranked teams, not getting one since the 2018 season. Beating Notre Dame would check that box and a couple of others for head coach Mike Elko. Big moments ahead, and even with some pain, Reed plans to be out there.
