At what point is Bill Self not worth 13 million per year?

So we are paying our coach more than anyone. We are paying our players more than anyone. Are both bad investments at this point? Other programs are much better than we are while spending around half the total cost when adding coaching salaries and player rev share. I think if one were to be lessened it would be Self's salary. After all, he is also in charge of player acquisition, which has been varying levels of lazy the last three years. This past year was the best but still leaves much to be desired.

I see a lot of 2020’s in there. Not a superb trajectory. At least not by Kansas standards. Not even by Bill’s standards. The game has evolved. You either get evolving or you become Indiana.

If the incoming recruiting class holds together, I think next year will be Self's last by his choice. I know he mentioned he wants to stay long enough to get Kansas back to it usual standard during the NIL/Portal era, but I've got to think he's starts to realize this era just isn't for him.

There comes a time when it is kind of about passing the torch to a younger, more energetic group of coaches who maybe have a better way of communicating with the players. I don't know if we are there or not. But a few things to keep in mind: 1. Self appears to be on a downward trajectory and has been now for a few years; 2. While not totally uncommon to win big time in their 60s most coaches don't and if they do it is not after a downturn. 3. This staff does not seem to be able to identify and/or attract championship caliber talent....looking at it from just a pure talent perspective we have been out-talented by multiple programs within the conference for several years now. On the other hand, there were a handful of games played this year where afterward I said "Now THAT looked like Kansas basketball". There just haven't been enough of those lately. Would love to see the numbers since his heart attack in '23. That seems to be when things began to slide the most.

Either Bill finds his Nick and Kirk in the portal or he rides off in to retirement. Roy made a great assessment of his abilities. He didn’t wait until UNC became a meddling program. I hope Bill understands his time and place in today’s game and makes the right choice for him and program when that time comes. All good things must come to an end.

We’re not paying our guys more than anyone. Believe Duke and Kentucky are more. BYU reportedly paying Dybantsa $7 million.

Whether we’re paying the most or not, we’re still paying top money. It’s whether or not we are getting our ROI.

No argument there.

Explain the logic in thinking May is a possibility

Not saying it’s a possibility but make him say no. You never know maybe he wants to coach at a blue blood in basketball?

By Self hanging on another year or two, it’s just buying more time to assess who are the best fits for the NIL era. Those three seem to have it going.

Golden would be my choice. I want someone that will stick around for 20 years. After the title, he is still only being paid $6m. We could easily beat that. Will he want to leave a program he won a title for is the real question.

Maybe because Michigan is historically and primarily a football school.

There’s an argument to be made in the post Covid world, if it was always 5 years to play 4, and we stuck with building the core of the team through high school recruiting with the occasional foreign player and a couple of transfers, then we would have had better results just off culture alone.

I still argue our assistants are azz. Self still has it but needs better assistants and a GM.

I do wonder if it has gotten a bit too comfortable. We brought in a former NBA head coach and I see no changes to the offense, at all. We do not appear to be succeeding at talent evaluation, roster construction or offensive efficiency...what do all these high priced dudes actually do?

bland pushing tre over and over last night was a bad look. If a guy is charged up, pushing him back like that isn't going to calm him down. Just stand in front of him and talk to him.

These have been my three for a while. The way Tommy talks about Ku and Allen it probably wouldn’t take much to lure him away.
