“We tried hiring a recruiter and throwing a bunch of money at the problem, and it failed miserably. So we’re gonna go the other direction now.”

Constantly changing their mission as a football program has to be exhausting for the average fan. What a joke to go out and hire a mid-major coach and not have the resources to put behind it. He's so far behind on the recruiting trail, he better be a top 5 coach in terms of scheme and development if they want any semblance of a top 40 team next season and beyond.

How many times did some of us say that they were making a huge mistake with over-investment in front loaded deals to sign/retain a handful of players? They have a really signficant issue now in that they simply don't have the rev share cap to compete on retaining a core roster, or HS recruiting. There's a very good reason their HS recruiting is in the toilet - they are having to underbid vs far more successful schools like Alabama.

They are the smelly kids at their own lunch table, and I throw apple cores at them when opportunities present.

This is what Alabama has been doing for 2 years. Anyone writing a "blank check" to get a high school player was doomed for failure long term. Especially the locker room. Bama has done a good job here.

Aren’t performance based NIL deals illegal? Whether it’s a collective or not I thought no performance incentives were allowed

I know you’re right here. Does it help that guys will come to Bama for under “market value” because of our brand power, whereas Auburn has less brand / intangible value to offer?

He is using Rev share and NIL interchangeably, I am guessing. 90% of folks don’t know the difference

Nil deals are different from what schools are paying

Brand certainly helps. But relationships still matter too. Especially with retention.

If done within revenue share it’s fine.

They gonna have to pay some kids big bucks or they won't get any 5 stars. If they do like Bama and UGA they will fail to get big croots

I'm sure this is true. This is probably mostly about revenue sharing, not NIL. Bluntly, way too many in the media are using "NIL" as a blanket term because they think it's a blanket term, not because it IS a blanket term. Which is making them have bad reporting.

Yep—their AD didn’t know basic rules last summer. It’s not a stretch that their moderator doesn’t know the particulars.

The blank check makes a nice splash and gives cool X graphics, but it always fails. If I’m an AU fan, I’m hoping every splash commitment that we overpaid for hits the portal (yes, Cam Coleman, too).

This is true across most organizations. Most people, if they are content, are happy to stay where they are, rather than constantly chase a few more dollars. All of my better employees could probably go elsewhere and find better paying jobs, and I know that, so I make sure they are taken care of as much as possible, good schedules, honoring as many time off requests s possible, constant positive enforcement, and they stick with me. I'm sure it's the same with teams. Keep the players happy and it solves a lot of retention problems. so long as they do their part
