Mark Byington Offense

Byington’s offense was top-10 on KenPom. Wants to run, space, and make you guard ball screens all game. Got good production out of former Heels Jalen Washington and Tyler Nickel too. Know he’s not a big name, but the more I read about him and his offensive philosophy, the more I like him if we strike out on the top guys.

I just can’t get past the $10M buyout — that’s an enormous figure for Byington. Just seems like bad business to throw that kind of money at just the rights to secure the coach (not even pay his salary/roster).

Yea, I don’t love that. Worth it if we get Tyler Tanner at pg to come along though?

It’s one thing to have to buyout Lloyd. It’s another thing for a guy who hasn’t proven much. I don’t see it.

To be fair, Lloyd has had the advantages of being at Arizona, which isn't a blue blood but is in the next tier down. Byington has been at Georgia Southern, James Madison, and Vanderbilt. The fact that he's made Vanderbilt relevant is pretty impressive. Yes, he's only gotten to the round of 32, but he's only been at Vandy two years. Lloyd didn't get Arizona past the Sweet 16 until his fifth season.

If he brought Tanner with him…. That could be fun.

If we don’t get Donovan…it’s panic time. And the problem is that if I can see it, then it’s beyond obvious to Donovan’s agent…

Besides being a dynamic offensive uptempo coach...i love his defenses too. Plays a very aggressive defense that prioritizes forced turnovers that lead to many fastbreaks and tries to just overwhelm opposing teams by beating the brakes off of them. And with even better talent, he will have large margin of victories, which is something i miss at UNC. What drove me nuts with Coach Davis, was that He did not believe in steals & forcing turnovers. He would always talk about playing fast but intentionally avoided forced turnovers which lead to fadtbreaks. Then you have to hope that your opposing team has a bad shooting night or else the game will be neck & neck the entire game. I do have reservations about Byington but if he truly is a great teacher like they say, his style of play on both offense and defense is perfect for UNC and super fun to watch.

I like Byington anyway but this is the clinching part for me. He’ll hit the ground running (if no Billy or dusty )

Byington would be a great hire. I can't get past the buyout though.

I’ve wanted BD or Boyinton since the first minute. AG to Aunt Bea, “Call the man!”

$10m is $10m. It’s just totally wasted. It’s easy for folks to say pay it. Someone has to pony that up.

don’t know enough him, but is he gonna compete on the recruiting trail and is he gonna promote the program to get funding and win the PR war that we have been getting destroyed by Dook in?

It's probably too high a buyout for us to go after him, but I still think he's a good coach and would do well here. At least he's won in a competitive P2 conference. That's more than we can say for some of the guys we might be able to get for less. If we get past May and Donovan, we're going to have to make a tough call on somebody. Edited to add: We reportedly offered Lloyd an opportunity to become the second highest paid coach in college basketball, so we have money. We can spend $10 million on Byington's buyout if we get him on a salary that's less than the one we offered Lloyd.

Ideally, you'd only want to pay that type of buyout for one of the game's current best.

Depends on the total compensation package you have to pay him. The buyout can be high if the total compensation package is affordable enough.

And ideally you don’t get publically embarassed at a final 4 press conference and caught with your pants down, but ideal is pretty far gone now
