This was a bad misread by the UK staff. They thought until the last day they had a chance. Whether they actually did, I guess only God knows but it does look like Stokes was likely headed to Kansas for sometime. Pope and his staff believed that could change. It clearly didn’t
The visit didn’t go well. A national reporter told me that the visit may have been what led Stokes to finally make the decision to go to Kansas. The visits this cycle haven’t gone well. Why, I guess is anyone’s guess
Jacob should have made clear that the reason he included that bit in the story was because he got a second source this afternoon. I told him that a few minutes ago and he understands. I didn’t know about him knowing it originally but if it was one source and he didn’t feel confident, he shouldn’t share it…especially if it could hurt UK. But when he got the second one decided to run it, he should have been clear on it. It was a mistakes and he will learn from it.
He and Jack both have tried to share info they have learned with the staff, including a couple of things that could have been helpful to them that they didn’t want to share publicly. The staff chooses not to take those calls from them, or anyone in national media right now, as I understand it. That’s their right but I think it’s a mistake.
Ultimately, this entire portal season, in my opinion, has had faults bc of a staff that has cut itself off from everyone not within their room. They aren’t connected to the market in a good way and they need a GM. They have chosen not to have one and the results are what they are.

It's sad to see the Pope experiment fail. Not for lack of trying but for lack of skill for this particular position. Thanks for passing along, Matt

If Jacob just had one source, and couldn't report it that's fine. I am not one that is upset but if HE knew, how did this staff not know and why did they keep pushing. It just makes UK look like simps.

It’s hard to mess up a visit. I wish we had more info on that, very interesting

It’s obvious they don’t know how to read people. They don’t know when to press, cash out, pull back, change their pitch or pivot in general. They dont know when someone is being polite just counting the minutes until their flight leaves. I ultimately believe this is the “pope can’t connect” that people are referring to with pope.

Pope 100% deserves all the negative radio and articles than Cal got and then some.

This is the end of Pope. We are mad at him and the state of UK basketball and the frustration gets let out on the people reporting the bad news. In less than 365 days we’ll have a new head coach that can hopefully turn things around

MattJones said:The needing to have a GM thing is like a kid that behaves terribly….the parents do nothing. And then when he’s like 16-17 the parents say “well we’re going to ground him after this latest issue” He’s needed a GM the entire time. He can’t just wait until he hits rock bottom and the school says “well we’re going to make him have a GM” The fact that he didn’t get a GM and the fact he thought he could get Stokes are two of the same issues. He is truly delusional and hardheaded. He won’t admit when he’s wrong and won’t change until he’s forced. He won’t shorten his rotations or stop his stupid sub rotations either. It’s all the same We thought getting rid of Cal…we’d get someone more open to change. But we hired some even more hard headed. This was a bad misread by the UK staff. Word on the street has been that pope needs a gm every single year. No one has the backbone to force it. So I’d assume we will be talking about needing a gm next year as well.
