The annual ACC/SEC Challenge took place across Tuesday and Wednesday, pitting teams from the two conferences against each other based on the previous season’s standings. After the SEC dominating results in the 2024-25, as they did a majority of the non-conference schedule, a new-look ACC hierarchy bounced back for a much more competitive 7-9 result.

The ACC even jumped out to an early advantage on Tuesday, ending Day One with a 6-3 lead over their rivals. However, a group of strong SEC teams on Day Two were able to close the gap quickly.

With the marquee non-conference series now complete, there is no shortage of analysis to break down. Both conferences get something out of the result, which will have a lasting impact through Selection Sunday as bracketology updates.

ACC Takeaways

The offseason investment made by many ACC programs paid off with a significantly better result in the event, which will provide benefit on Selection Sunday. Non-conference Strength of Record is an important metric while will be aided by solid results from nearly half the members, and so are conference-to-conference comparisons which will now be much closer to call.

Duke and North Carolina both come away big winners, getting wins over recognizable SEC programs which project to compete for top seeds. Syracuse also gets a boost toward the bubble, picking up a Quadrant 1 win over Tennessee, while Virginia‘s wide margin of victory vs. Texas will help them across the board with computers.

Louisville suffered a loss against Arkansas, which could hurt their resume head-to-head with others in the mix for a Top 16 overall seed temporarily and pushes them further away from the 1-seed line. Wake Forest could also struggle with their result, losing by a wide margin to a team they will hope to enter the conversation with by March.

SEC Takeaways

Replicating the results of 2024-25 would have been difficult, but there is no doubt this season’s outcome provides far less value to the SEC, which is coming off a historically strong year. However, there are plenty positives for the conference to point toward as they pick up a conference-to-conference comparison win, and several teams leave happy with their outcome.

The big winners for the SEC, listed alphabetically, were Arkansas, Auburn, Oklahoma and Vanderbilt. The Razorbacks landed their first Quad 1 win of the season, while the Tigers evened their record in the top two quadrants. The Sooners were able to run up the score against a bubble team in Wake Forest, while the Commadores won a battle of undefeateds to keep climbing the board across models.

On the other hand, multiple SEC teams saw their resume take an early non-conference blow which will leave more to do through the conference slate as they look to bounce back. This group includes Florida with third Q1 loss and dropping offensive efficiency from the backcourt, and Kentucky which falls to 5-3 overall without a positive result in the top two quadrants. Texas also took another big blow to their data, facing a blowout vs. Virginia.
