Mike Brey says he is 'riding' success, sticking with a suit

Notre Dame has had a tough go of it in coach Mike Brey‘s final season with the program, but a win over Louisville has Brey considering a wardrobe change. Or, rather, sticking with a suit.

Brey donned a suit against Louisville and Notre Dame pulled off a 76-62 win, so the retiring head coach made sure to joke about his suit-wearing powers in a post-game press conference.

“1-0, brother, in a suit,” Brey said. “And I’ll tell you one thing: That suit, I’m dry-cleaning that sucker and it’s coming out Saturday. I’m riding the suit. I’m going to ride the suit. We’re going to ride the suit for a while.”

Notre Dame will look to continue its winning streak when it hosts Wake Forest at 1 p.m. on Saturday.

Brey, of course, will be wearing his suit. But he’ll also be thinking about ways to pass along some traditions to whoever inherits his seat next. Sticking with a suit made him think of Coaches vs. Cancer and the work his program has done in helping lead the charge on that cause.

“Certainly the Coaches vs. Cancer thing was great, and you know how much we’ve been involved here with ours,” Brey said. “And actually we want to keep that going in August and hand that off to the next coach. That would be my goal with our charity. It would be a hell of a thing introduce him to the people in the community that’s been so helpful. And I’ll go to the bar and he can hob-knob.”

Ven-Allen Lubin on the mend

The hits keep coming for Notre Dame‘s Ven-Allen Lubin on the injury front, with a sprained ankle keeping him out of Saturday’s win over Louisville.

Coach Mike Brey revealed the reason for Lubin’s absence on Saturday following the 76-62 win over the Cardinals.

“I would hope he’d be ready to go next Saturday,” Brey said. “That’s been really frustrating. Just when the kid gets some momentum — and I thought he played really well in Raleigh the other night — he tweaked it yesterday. When you think about him it’s been the retina, the eye, the broken nose. He’s just not been able to get going.”

Prior to his latest tweak of the sprained ankle, Lubin had averaged 5.7 points and 4.3 rebounds per game for the Fighting Irish.
