Oklahoma State hiring North Texas head coach Eric Morris
Oklahoma State is hiring North Texas head coach Eric Morris as the Cowboys’ next coach, sources told On3.
In October, Oklahoma State athletic director Chad Weiberg said his goal was to “be in a position to move” on replacing former coach Mike Gundy by the end of the regular season. He did that on Tuesday.
Sources tell On3 that a deal has been signed between Morris and Oklahoma State. Morris will remain with North Texas through the end of the season, including the playoffs.
Morris, 40, has led the Mean Green to a school record 10-1 season. With two more wins – Saturday against Temple and in the American Conference title game – the Mean Green likely would earn a berth in the College Football Playoff as the highest-ranked Group of 5 conference champion.

Morris is 21-15 in three years at UNT. He was also the head coach at Incarnate Word from 2019-21, compiling a 24-18 record.
Morris, who played at Texas Tech under Mike Leach, was the offensive coordinator at Texas Tech and Washington State. In his career, he has coached quarterbacks Baker Mayfield, Patrick Mahomes, Cam Ward, John Mateer and Chandler Morris (no relation).
“He gives you confidence to go out there and be yourself and play the game the way you’re supposed to play,” Mahomes told ESPN about playing under Morris. “And he’ll change the offense for that. It’s not surprising to me that he’s had so much success.”
