Steve Spurrier picks Georgia to win SEC Championship

A spot is already reserved for Georgia in the SEC Championship game. A regular season contest does remain on the schedule, facing Georgia Tech in Clean Old Fashioned Hate. But Kirby Smart will take his team to Atlanta either way, facing the winner of Saturday’s Lone Star Showdown against Texas and Texas A&M.

Predictions for the game are already in for Steve Spurrier. He is taking Georgia to wind up winners, citing the game’s location as a big reason why.

“Georgia gets to play in Atlanta,” Spurrier said. “I’m going to take the Bulldogs to win the SEC this year.”

Weirdly enough, there has not been too much SEC Championship success for Georgia under Smart. In six games played, only two have resulted in wins. Four losses have come at the expense of Alabama (2018, 2021, 2023) and LSU (2019). But as mentioned, neither of those two teams are still alive to face the Bulldogs. A fresh opponent will line up against them on Dec. 7.

Spurrier added a bonus prediction, thinking Texas A&M gets to face Georgia. He likes the Aggies in their rivalry renewal, winning at Kyle Field.

“I’m going to halfway think Texas A&M upsets Texas. It won’t be a huge upset because they play in [College Station]. And that will toss the SEC Championship game to A&M and Georiga.”

More will be on the line than usual from Atlanta. Winner will automatically get a spot in the College Football Playoff, likely earning a bye as well. Georgia can potentially afford a loss and still get into the 12-team field as an at-large.

But Spurrier does not believe UGA will be holding its breath on Selection Sunday. He has them hoisting the trophy to add to a long list of recent accomplishments inside the program.
