For the final time as Big 12 opponents, Texas will face off against TCU in Fort Worth. It’s not the biggest rivalry in the conference but certainly one the two programs care about. Especially since the Horned Frogs seemingly always find a way to get one over the Longhorns.

Despite being on the road, Texas has opened up as a 9.5-point favorite according to Fan Duel. Even with the status of Quinn Ewers in question heading into the week, the oddsmakers are comfortable enough with what Maalik Murphy has produced to give the Longhorns the nod.

The over/under is set at 54.5 points.

TCU joined the Big 12 in 2012 and has dominated the series since then. Texas has lost eight of the 11 matchups between the two. Another opportunity to play spoiler is there for Sonny Dykes‘ team, in a game that will likely mean more than most.

However, the biggest storyline heading into the game will be Ewers’ health. He has missed the past two games but Texas has found a way to survive with Murphy. If Steve Sarkisian can get his starting quarterback onto the field against TCU, it will be a major boost.

“Some early signs of optimism for a return for Quinn Ewers next week against TCU,” ESPN’s Thamel said on Saturday during ESPN College GameDay. “Ewers did not practice this week, but did begin a throwing regiment, which he hadn’t been able to do early on as he’s been dealing with that sprained AC joint in his throwing shoulder.

“So as we said, (on Saturday vs. Kansas State) we’ll see Maalik Murphy and a potential return to practice for Ewers next week. There’s optimism he could build back and return to the starting lineup against the Horned Frogs.”

Texas hoping to keep pace in Big 12 Championship race

With how results played out in the Big 12 on Saturday, Texas will control their own destiny to make it to AT&T Stadium in Arlington. They are just one of two teams to only have one conference loss, with Oklahoma State taking down Oklahoma in the final Bedlam game.

Getting a win against TCU would just be another step toward Sarkisian accomplishing his goal this season of winning the Big 12. Heading up the interstate and playing in Fort Worth has not been too kind to the program over the past decade-plus.

Another huge test will be on the way, no matter who winds up being healthy.
