Women's basketball daily report: 1/22 edition

It was a loaded day of hoops. Here’s the daily report.

A few notables

Well, first of all, BYU earned a big win over Texas Tech last night… but someone lost some hair.

Plus, a big-time recruit flipped her commitment. Joyce Isi Etute, who had committed to UCLA in October, is now a Longhorn. The 6-2 forward from Luxembourg is largely considered one of the best international recruits in the 2026 class.

Next up: we got some *very* exciting scheduling news. Two elite Huskies will meet again very soon.

Lastly, let’s shout out a few programs who stayed undefeated in conference play with wins last night.

  1. UCLA (8-0 in Big Ten play) took down Purdue
  2. George Mason (8-0 in A-10 play) earned a very solid road win at St. Bonaventure
  3. Rhode Island (8-0 in A-10 play) beat a phenomenal Davidson team at home
  4. Ball State (7-0 in MAC play) took down UMass, who has been one of the biggest surprises of the year
  5. High Point (6-0 in Big South play) beat Winthrop in a double-digit result
  6. Miami (OH) (7-0 in MAC play) took down Buffalo with ease
  7. North Dakota State (6-0 in Summit League play) earned a road win at St. Thomas

Today’s game of the day: Iowa at Maryland (NBC)

This is a big game for NCAA Tournament seeding. Iowa is largely seen as one of the top teams in the league right now, while Maryland’s stock has fallen slightly after being hit with some long-term injuries. If Maryland could manage a win here, it would aid them mightily.

Player to watch: Aaliyah Chavez

Aaliyah Chavez entered the season as the freshman to watch. The hype has been following Chavez for years – and that hype resulted in a commitment to a top SEC school, significant NIL compensation and pressure.

Chavez is still among the best freshmen in her class, but her style of basketball hasn’t translated perfectly. Shot selection, taking care of the ball and pace are a few aspects of her game that could use some tinkering, which is to be expected from nearly all freshmen. But there are a lot of things that Chavez can do extremely well, like score from all three levels, generate fast break points and facilitate plays.

This game, however, is a big one for her NFOY campaign. If Chavez can help lead Oklahoma to a win (or even a respectable loss) to the No. 2 Gamecocks, it’ll certainly help bolster her resume.
