Casa Grande (Ariz.) Union three-star athlete Aveon Williams has decommitted from North Carolina, he announced on Thursday via social media.

He was pledged to the Tar Heels since June 15 and was recruited to Chapel Hill as a tight end.

“This journey has taught me a lot, and I’m grateful for every step. Thank you to the University of North Carolina, the coaching staff, and everyone who believed in me. After careful consideration, I have decided to decommit and reopen my recruitment,” Williams wrote announcing his decision. “Wishing the program nothing but success moving forward. Sometimes you have to close one door to open another. I’m excited for the next chapter and the opportunities ahead.

Williams is the No. 686 overall prospect and No. 18 athlete in the 2026 cycle, according to the Rivals Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all major recruiting media companies. He’s also the No. 10 recruit in Arizona.

The 6-foot-6, 230-pounder is now back on the board with National Signing Day less than two weeks away. The Tar Heels have a massive 2026 class, which now sits at 35 commits following the departure of Williams.

As a senior for Casa Grande Union, Williams tallied 15 touchdowns. He caught 44 passes for 900 yards and 13 scores and also rushed for a pair of scores.

More on UNC Recruiting

UNC currently has the No. 17 class in the nation, according to the Rivals Industry Team Recruiting Rankings. Nine blue-chippers are now in the fold following this week’s rankings updates.

Bill Belichick and his staff have pulled off some unreal flips this summer and fall. Four-star safety Jakob Weatherspoon (Ohio State), four-star cornerback Kenton Dopson (Miami), four-star wide receiver Carnell Warren (Virginia Tech), four-star defensive lineman Trashawn Ruffin (Texas A&M), Rivals four-star offensive tackle J.B. Shabazz (Tennessee) and three-star cornerback David Davis (Penn State) are among those who shifted from one pledge to the Tar Heels.

Weatherspoon and Dopson headline a lockdown secondary haul that could also include four-star athlete CJ Sadler, who’s also capable of playing wide receiver at the next level. Four-star quarterback Travis Burgess remains in the mix and is now the No. 12 QB in the nation.

The class also ranks No. 4 in the ACC. The loaded class can be seen in full here.
