Rhode Island commit Brayden Richardson sets NY Section 1 rushing record
The emergence of Sleepy Hollow (N.Y.) senior running back Brayden Richardson, who recently just committed to Rhode Island, has lifted the Horsemen to new heights they’ve never been before in program history.
On Saturday afternoon at Middletown High School, Richardson was the battering ram in bring Sleepy Hollow to its first-ever state championship game. In the process, Richardson set a NYSPHSAA Section 1 single game rushing record, rushing for 466 yards in a 42-20 win over Glen Falls, breaking Valhalla’s Luke Foisset’s previous mark of 414.
Richardson also added five touchdowns on the ground in the victory as Sleepy Hollow will meet Rochester Monroe for the NYSPHSAA Class B state championship in Syracuse next weekend.
When it comes to running backs out of the Empire State, there’s not many that have been as good as Richardson. The senior running back ranks amongst the top five, according to MaxPreps, when it comes to rushing yardage. Richardson has rushed unofficially for 2,418 yards and scored 36 touchdowns, by far his biggest statistical season playing high school football.

Before this historic season for Sleepy Hollow, the Horsemen hadn’t won more than six games since 2012. For historical context, the last time the Horsemen won a section championship was back in 1978 and never been to a state title game.
Now, Richardson and Sleepy Hollow will get a chance to do one more thing the program has never done before and that’s win a state title in football.
