Counting down the Alabama roster three players at a time. Next up for the 2023 series: defensive lineman Jordan Renaud and tight ends Ty Lockwood and Miles Kitselman.

90 DL Jordan Renaud

2022: During his high school career, Renaud played at Palmetto (Fl.) and Lewisville (Tx.) high schools before finishing up at Tyler (Tx.) Legacy. According to the On3 Industry Ranking, Renaud checked in as the nation’s No. 11 defensive line and No. 71 overall prospect for the 2023 cycle. Renaud enrolled at UA in January and took part in spring drills.

Of note: Up to 261 pounds at the start of spring practice, Renaud settled in with the defensive line. As a member of the White team defense in the A-Day game, the newcomer worked at end in the base and big nickel and inside in pass rush situations. Similar to guys like Jonathan Allen (who checked in at 264 pounds as freshman in 2013), Jah-Marien Latham and Khurtiss Perry before him in that his most important work in the immediate future will come in the area of sports science.

What we wrote about Renaud upon his signing last December: “Brings to mind Da’Shawn Hand. Some prospects you wonder how they’re going to get to 285 or so and not lose something where speed and agility are concerned. Not so much with this guy. Length stands out with Renaud, who uses it against the run to stack and shed. Also shows a nice arm over move when rushing the passer.”

89 TE Ty Lockwood

2022: Multiple setbacks (appendix and shoulder) led to Lockwood seeing limited action during his senior season at Thompson’s Station (Tn.) High School. As a sophomore and junior, Lockwood caught a combined 85 passes for 1,068 yards and five touchdowns. According to the On3 Industry Ranking, Lockwood ranked as the nation’s No. 14 tight end prospect for the 2023 cycle. Enrolled at UA in January and took part in spring drills.

Of note: As a member of the Crimson team offense, Lockwood worked both in line and off the ball in the A-Day game. Lone target came late in the third quarter and went off his hands. Lockwood got enough of a crashing Perry to help running back Justice Haynes find the end zone late in the fourth quarter. Prototype tight end frame will allow for needed increases in functional strength as he moves forward.

What we wrote about Lockwood upon his signing last December: “In line with today’s players at his position, Lockwood has experience In-line, off the ball and flexed out. Enthusiastic blocker on tape. As a receiver, not going to run by safeties and sub defensive backs, but capable of making the kind of catches that keep an offense on schedule.”

88 TE Miles Kitselman

2022: Junior college transfer saw action in six games. Both of Kitselman’s receptions on the season came in Alabama’s season-opening win over Utah State.

Of note: A late addition in the 2022 recruiting cycle, Kitselman’s first run through spring drills at UA ended with him joining Amari Niblack as the top two tight ends for the Crimson (second-team) offense in the A-Day game. Kitselman was targeted five times in the scrimmage, catching three passes for 36 yards. Inserted from off the ball to help Haynes post the first of his two rushing scores. With CJ Dippre, Robbie Ouzts, Danny Lewis and Niblack expected to be a part of the plan on a weekly basis, Kitselman’s roles in the fall figure to be along the lines of a quality depth provider and special teams candidate.
