Billy Napier and the Gators just hit the jackpot, as All-American cornerback Wardell Mack committed to the University of Florida.

That’s according to On3’s Hayes Fawcett.

Mack, a 2024 prospect from Marreo (La.) John Ehret, just announced his pledge over additional finalists Texas, LSU and Florida State. He is commitment No. 22 for the Orange and Blue.

“On my official visit in April I saw it was a great place, with great people trying to put the pieces together to put Florida back on the map,” Mack told Fawcett. “Just having a sit down with coach Corey (Raymond) and his work through the years. Also, having Louisiana native coaches puts a plus on everything.

“Coach Armstrong made it clear that I’m a great player that he wants on his defense, and feels as though I’m savvy enough to play corner and nickel in the defense. Coach Juluke and coach Napier have made me feel at home every time I stepped foot in Gainesville.”

With Mack on board, the Gators now hold commitments from two cornerbacks, as Sarasota (Fla.) Cardinal Mooney standout Teddy Foster is also teamed up with the SEC program.

As we noted this morning, cornerback is a top priority for the Gators this cycle.

Much of the attention has been Zay Mincey and understandably so; however, reeling in Mack is definitely a weight off the Gators’ shoulders. And speaking of Mincey, he is still on the board along with Jamari Howard. Alabama commit Jameer Grimsley will likely be pursued until the end as well, so the Gators could ultimately expand their cornerback class even more.

All in all, this is a massive commitment for the likes of Billy Napier and Corey Raymond.

On3 Scouting Report on Wardell Mack

Smooth moving defensive back with the length and playmaking ability to make an impact as a cornerback or safety.

Measured in at around 6-foot-0.5, 170 pounds prior to his senior season. Has elite length for the position with arms that measure 33.75 inches. Shows the ability to stick with receivers, using his length and movement skills to stay in-phase. Physical in press coverage, using his length to reroute receivers at the line of scrimmage.

Shows loose hips and is fluid when changing directions. Has refined footwork with a very smooth backpedal in the camp setting. A willing downhill defender, not scared of contact or being physical as a tackler. Shows solid top-end speed, but does not look to be top-tier in that regard. Ball skills are good, not great, as he does not look to be the most natural pass catcher. Is still comfortable playing the ball at the catch point, getting his hands on the football.

Viewed as a high floor prospect who could see an immediate role as a nickel corner at the next level and eventually developing into a field corner. Relatively young for the class, turning 18 in April of his senior year of high school.
