It had been quite a while since Daquayvious Sorey was in Gainesville for an up-close look at the Gators, with much of that due to his commitment to Georgia; however, the four-star prospect recently reopened his recruitment and is now putting in the miles during the offseason.

On Saturday, the Chipley (Fla.) standout returned to Florida for his first meeting with Billy Napier’s staff. Conversations with UF are taking place roughly every other day, with a handful of coaches linked to his recruitment.

‘It was great. I liked the visit today,” Sorey told Gators Online’s Donavon Keiser and others. “I got to communicate and build a relationship with the new staff, so it was good.”

One of those staff members was Lamar Sorey, Daquayvious’s cousin and a quality control coach with the Gators

“Having somebody that is already here at Florida and knowing he’s my cousin, that’s the key,” Sorey said. “That’s somebody I can talk to that is already here and I can build relationships with some of the coaches on the staff.

“(He can tell me) what the coaches look for and the players, telling me to keep my grades up, watch how I move around and act around people, and stuff like that.”

Billy Napier’s staff is changing UF’s culture in a hurry

In addition to reconnecting with his cousin, Sorey also spent an ample amount of time with Billy Napier, Keary Colbert and Katie Turner. He has yet to release a group of top contenders but says UF sits firmly in his top five following today’s visit.

“The culture, like the coaches. They have a good relationship with each other. They also connect with the players a lot,” Sorey said of his interest in the Gators.

Another big portion of today’s return visit was being able to dissect UF’s play between the white lines. Spring football is in full swing and Sorey came away impressed with the early progression under Napier.

“It was fun. Coach KC is real energetic,” Sorey said. “He ran routes today; I got to see him move around a little bit. I’d love coach KC to coach me.”

Sorey has several additional visits in the works

When asked about the additional schools pushing the right buttons, Sorey rattled off a list of Alabama, Miami, Kentucky, Georgia, Kansas and Marshall.

As for future itinerary, the 2023 prospect is visiting Florida A&M on March 25 and planning trips with LSU and Penn State. No official visits are currently scheduled

“A month or two before I graduate,” Sorey said of his commitment timeline. “I’m trying to graduate in December.”

During the 2021 season, Sorey reeled in 30 receptions for 546 yards and six touchdowns while chipping in with 187 yards and two additional scores on the ground. He was truly a do-it-all threat for the 9-4 Tigers, as he also recorded four interceptions, including one returned for a touchdown, and a pair of punt return touchdowns.

According to the On3 Consensus, a complete and equally weighted industry-generated average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies, Sorey is the No. 31 wide receiver in the 2023 class. He is also the No. 177 player overall and 34th-ranked junior in the Sunshine State, possessing an On3 NIL Valuation of $14,300.

The On3 NIL Valuation is an index that looks to set the standard market value for both high school and college-level athletes. The NIL valuation does not act as a tracker of the value of NIL deals an athlete has completed to date; it rather signifies an athlete’s value at a certain moment in time.
