What the Gators are getting in Tawaski Abrams

Scouting report: Abrams has multiple certified 100-meter track times of less than 10.8 seconds and what we believe to be a best of 10.62 seconds in 2023. Additionally, he has a top 200 time of 21.53. That speed shows up on the field, especially his acceleration. Abrams can get from 0 to 60 in a hurry. And he seems to play fast in pads. Faster even on occasion than his recorded times indicate.

He’s not just fast. It’s one thing to have straight-line speed. It’s another to be elusive in the open field. Abrams has the ability to make people miss. He has quick shifts in direction and strong one-cut ability. He can go one way, then plant his foot in the ground and dart away from a defender. He even has the ability to start and stop, then start again in a flash. Once he’s in the clear, look out. In the open field, if he can create a one-on-one situation, that could be a good thing for Florida.

He plays small and tall: What do we mean by this? Well, at times Abrams uses his fairly slight frame (he’s listed at 5-foot-11 and 175-pounds) to play small and weave his way through traffic. But then he’s also got a solid vertical and high points the ball well (playing big). His video shows him going up and getting the football multiple times. In sum, Abrams has more versatility that one might think for a player his size.

He can get open at multiple spots. Abrams runs solid routes and is quick getting in and out of his breaks to create separation. Thus he shows the ability on video to get open on a variety of different routes, from crosses to slants to posts to post corners. And, at least at the high school level, he’ll play in traffic over the middle. He makes opposing cornerbacks work.
