One of Florida’s defensive commits tells Gators Online he is meeting with the new Gators staff this week.

Jamari Lyons, a four-star defensive tackle in the 2022 class, says head coach Billy Napier is visiting him on Thursday. That meeting will take place at Viera (Fla.) High.

Tagged as the 29th-ranked defensive lineman in the On3 Consensus Rankings, Lyons committed to the Gators back in early October. South Carolina was the additional finalist in his recruitment, while the likes of Georgia, Ohio State and Miami extended offers during the recruiting process as well.

Lyons previously penned a first-person essay for Florida Today to explain in his own words why he chose the Gators.

“I’m following my childhood dream,” Lyons wrote. “Florida has been my dream school since I was little. I always dreamed of playing in the Swamp and playing at Florida.”

Shortly after the contact period started, UF staff members Greg Knox and David Turner met with Lyons as well; however, as GO reported on Monday, none of the positional coaches under Dan Mullen are being retained by Napier.

Going forward, Lyons is expected to take a second official visit to the University of Florida. His first multi-day trip was logged back in June, but prospects are permitted to take a second one after a coaching change takes place.

With 11 prospects in the class, the Gators currently have the 22nd-ranked recruiting class on On3 Sports; however, they are ranked ninth in the SEC with the Early Signing Period roughly a week away.
