Gators gain commitment from Memphis DT CamRon Jackson
The Florida Gators secured a commitment from Memphis defensive tackle CamRon Jackson on Friday night. Jackson announced his decision on Twitter.
Jackson had set up an official visit to Gainesville for January 4 but pulled the trigger on his commitment before even visiting campus.
According to the On3 Consensus, a complete and equally weighted industry-generated average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies, the 6-foot-6, 340-pound Jackson was a three-star prospect and the No. 75-ranked defensive lineman in the 2020 class. Jackson was ranked as the No. 18 defensive lineman in the transfer portal by On3.
Last season Jackson tallied 41 tackles, 2.5 for a loss, and one sack. He also had four quarterback hurries and a pass breakup.
Jackson fills a major need for the Gators
With the departure of Gervon Dexter and Jalen Lee, Florida was left with just three scholarship interior defensive linemen. They bolstered that number by adding Louisville transfer Caleb Banks and three freshmen, but lacked veteran experience in the room. Jackson has played in 34 games over three years with Memphis.
The Gators return Desmond Watson and Chris McClellan, two young players who have a bright future, along with redshirt freshman Jamari Lyons. The addition of Banks and Jackson gives Florida experience in a room that otherwise is very green.
More about the transfer portal
The NCAA Transfer Portal, which covers every NCAA sport at the Division I, II, and III levels, is a private database with names of student-athletes who wish to transfer. It is not accessible to the public.
The process of entering the portal is done through a school’s compliance office. Once a player provides written notification of an intent to transfer, the office enters the player’s name in the database. The compliance office has 48 hours to comply with the player’s request and that request cannot be refused.
Once a player’s name shows up in the portal, other schools can contact the player. Players can change their minds at any point and withdraw from the portal. However, once a player enters the portal, the current scholarship no longer has to be honored. If a player enters the portal but decides to stay, the school is not obligated to provide a scholarship anymore.
