A year ago, Florida Gators play-by-play announcer Mick Hubert announced his retirement following the final regular season SEC baseball series against the South Carolina Gamecocks.

Hubert, who had a 33-year stint covering the Florida Gators, called 2,507 Gator games from 1989-2022 and didn’t miss a single football game in that span. He called over 1,061 basketball games and 1,027 baseball games during his time in Gainesville.

A year removed from Hubert’s last game, let us dive into some of his best calls during his illustrious career.

“Doering’s Got a Touchdown”

Hubert made a name for himself alongside Gators wide receiver Chris Doering, who willed the Gators to a win over the Kentucky Wildcats in the fall of 1993. This call put Hubert on the map, making him a fan-favorite that continued until his retirement in 2022.

With the clock ticking, Doering ran up the seam and caught a pass from Danny Wuerffel, giving the Gators the lead with two seconds remaining.

Guice comes up short

With an SEC East championship on the line, the LSU Tigers were ready to spoil the Gators’ plans in 2016. The Florida red-zone defense was nails in a low-scoring affair, as both offenses struggled to find the end zone in Baton Rogue. The Gators won the game by keeping Guice out of the end zone from the half-yard line, winning 16-10.

The Heave to Cleve

In a magical ending to a ranked showdown in The Swamp, the Gators walked off the Tennessee Volunteers in 2017 behind a miraculous pass from Feleipe Franks. After avoiding multiple defenders in a collapsing pocket, Franks uncorked a laser to Tyrie Cleveland as he crossed the goal line and caught the ball, giving the Gators a 26-20 victory.

Chris Chiozza sends Gators to Elite Eight

Fan-favorite basketball player Chris Chiozza kept the Gators’ March hopes alive in 2017, sending Florida to the Elite Eight as the overtime buzzer expired.

Florida takes down No. 2 Auburn at home

A middling Gators basketball team welcomed the No. 2 Auburn Tigers to the Stephen O’Connell Center in 2022, behind a red-hot run from the Tigers. Auburn came in at 24-2, with only one loss in conference play. The 16-10 Gators took down the Tigers after Auburn could not get a shot off at the buzzer.
