KSR Today: Time to regroup...

Good morning, folks! I wish I came to you with exciting news about how Kentucky just upset the top-ranked, two-time defending champion Georgia Bulldogs on the road, setting up a potential College Gameday matchup against Missouri in Lexington six days from now. Unfortunately, that dream died shortly after Saturday’s kickoff…

Kentucky was manhandled by Georgia, which proved to the entire country why they are still well-deserving of that No. 1 title. The Bulldogs dropped a 50-burger on the ‘Cats, winning 51-13. UGA smashed Brad White’s defense, posting 608 yards of total offense while All-American tight end Brock Bowers caught seven passes for 132 yards and a score. First-year starting quarterback Carson Beck went 28-35 passing for 389 yards and four touchdowns.

The Bulldogs led 21-0 by the end of the first quarter and it was over from there. No comeback attempt would be possible. UK has now lost 14 games in a row to Georgia dating back to 2010.

“The good news is this only counts as one (loss). We have to respond,” Stoops said postgame. “I’ll put this one on me. We weren’t prepared. We didn’t play very good in any area. They beat us from the start to the finish.”

“It’s not our standard,” Defensive coordinator Brad White added. “There’s no way to sugarcoat it. There’s no way to sit up here and tell you — listen, we got whipped.”

Unfortunately, injuries were spread across the Kentucky roster in the loss. Wide receiver Barion Brown, who had been dealing with a hamstring injury, did not play the second half after totaling one catch in the first. Safety Jalen Geiger went down with a shoulder injury in the second quarter and did not return. Defensive lineman Keeshawn Silver and linebacker Trevin Wallace both went down with shoulder issues. Freshman tight end Khamari Anderson was knocked out of the game in the final minute.

In short, Saturday night was an all-systems failure from a team and coaching staff that hasn’t played that poorly in some time. Kentucky came into the weekend with a chance to break another program barrier — they’ll leave Athens wondering how possible that idea actually is.

If you have the stomach for it, check out all of KSR’s postgame content below. It’s time to regroup for Missouri.

Game info for Missouri game

There won’t be much time for the ‘Cats to sulk over this loss. Up next is going to be another challenge as the Missouri Tigers come to Lexington next weekend for another SEC East showdown. Missouri also lost yesterday, falling to No. 23 LSU 49-39 in Columbia. The Tigers came into the week ranked No. 21, but could drop out of the top 25 entirely (just like there’s a good chance Kentucky does, too), flipping this game from a potential top 15 matchup to a battle between unranked teams.

Shortly after Saturday night’s loss for UK, the SEC announced that Kentucky vs. Missouri will kick off at 7:30 p.m. ET next Saturday (Oct. 14) and air on the SEC Network. Auburn at LSU will take the 7:00 p.m. ET ESPN slot instead.

Kentucky will welcome Missouri to town having won seven of the last eight meetings, but there will be extra pressure on the Wildcats to pull this out after what went down in Athens. A bounce-back performance is going to be necessary. Below are all of next weekend’s SEC game times and TV assignments.

Today in UK Athletics

It’s not all about football this weekend for UK Athletics. The Kentucky men’s soccer team (3-6-2, 0-3-1 Sun Belt) earned its first point of Sun Belt Conference play on Saturday with a 1-1 draw against Coastal Carolina on the road. Freshman Isaiah Chisolm scored the only goal of the match for UK in the 20th minute. He was assisted by sophomore Max Miller.

Later on Sunday, the women’s soccer, volleyball, and softball teams will all be in action. Women’s soccer is now ranked No. 18 in the country following their hot start to the season. They’ll look to stay on the rise with a home game against Vanderbilt at 3:00 p.m. EST on the SEC Network. Shortly before that, the volleyball ‘Cats will host Ole Miss inside of Rupp Arena at 1:30 p.m. EST. Softball will get the day started in South Bend, IN with an 11:00 a.m. EST first pitch against UIC as part of the team’s fall exhibitions. They’ll play again later in the day against Notre Dame at 1:30 p.m. EST.
