2023 Loganville (Ga.) Grayson safety Michael Daugherty announced his college commitment on Wednesday night, honoring his late grandfather Johnny Paschal with his decision. LSU landed the four-star safety over Louisville, North Carolina and others.

LSU hosted Daugherty for an unofficial visit earlier this spring and then an official visit to kick off April. Head coach Brian Kelly laid out his plan for the 6-0, 170-pound prospect on the visit.

“About the opportunity here. They were less talks centered about football, but we had good talks how this is the place (to be) and I’d be developed,” Daugherty told The Bengal Tiger earlier this month.

From safeties coach Kerry Cooks to defensive coordinator Matt House to LSU players, it all stood out to Michael Daugherty on the visit.

“Cooks and House both see me playing safety. House coming from Kansas City wants my versatility to be used like Tyrann (Mathieu). We went over a couple their concepts, coverages and calls,” he said. “Major Burns, Joe Foucha and Greg Brooks and all those guys show nothing but love and kept it real with everything I asked them.”

Daugherty is the No. 255 overall prospect in the 2023 class, according to the On3 Consensus, a complete and equally weighted industry-generated average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. He ranks as the nation’s No. 22 safety and the No. 25 junior prospect in the Peach State.

Michael Daugherty latest to join LSU 2023 class

Recruiting coordinator Brian Polian spoke at length about LSU’s recruiting efforts so far in the 2023 class. Moving down from Notre Dame to LSU, the geographical advantages LSU provides are there. At the end of the day, relationships won out with Daugherty and Polian said that’s the norm.

“It’s still relationship-based no matter where you’re at. Whether it be Notre Dame, Stanford, Texas A&M, LSU — a handful places that I’ve been. It’s still relationship-driven,” Polian said. “There is, I think, in some cases, a more emotional connection with a geography when we recruit here, that there are players that know immediately, ‘I want to play in the SEC.’ Or a young man like Will Campbell, who (said) ‘I want to be an LSU Tiger.’

Michael Daugherty is the third member of LSU’s 2023 recruiting class. He joins four-star North Caddo (La.) wide receiver Omarion Miller and four-star St. Louis (Mo.) DeSmet tight end Mac Markway.
