Elite forward Robert Miller signs with LSU
Four-star forward Robert Miller signed with LSU on Wednesday evening, less than two months after committing to play for Matt McMahon and the Tigers in September.
A 6-foot-10 forward, Miller is ranked as the No. 61 player in the country and the No. 2 player in Texas on the On3 Industry Rankings. On3 has Miller as the No. 43 player in the country with a 95 rating. Miller is the second highest rated player McMahon has received a commitment from in his brief tenure at LSU, with the first coming from now sophomore wing Tyrell Ward.
The Tigers were in a tightly contested battle with Texas for the majority of 2023, but in early September, the Houston product canceled his visits to Texas and Alabama, paving the way for LSU to pick up his commitment on Sept. 22.
Miller first visited LSU on April 24 of 2023, putting the Tigers in a great spot entering the summer. As Miller continued to shoot up the rankings, LSU continued to push in his recruitment. Eventually, LSU hosted Miller on an official visit on Sept. 8, which ended up being his only visit in the fall.
In addition to the Tigers being all-in on getting Miller on board, it also helped that Miller’s dad played at LSU in the 1990’s on the defensive line, giving them a connection to the school.
“My conversations with LSU so far have been really good,” Miller told the Bengal Tiger on May 10. “They’ve been talking to me about the role I’d be playing if I went there as well as off the court stuff about me and my well-being. Obviously my dad went to LSU and I know some people think I might go there because of him, but they’ve been doing a really good job of making it feel like a second home and making me feel welcomed. I feel really good about LSU right now.”
Miller is an exciting prospect for McMahon’s program as an incredibly skilled and savvy player with the height and length to be an impact player on both ends. The handle, shooting, and touch on offense gives him pro potential, while his rim protection and defensive upside could allow him to get on the court early in his career.
Miller played at Pasadena Memorial high school in Houston, then over the summer played for TJ Ford Academy alongside some of the top talent in the Houston area in the AAU circuit.
“Scoring-wise, I can do that,” Miller told On3. “I can shoot, I like to get my teammates involved. I’m pretty athletic, I take pride in defense first, and I try to make sure everything is set on the defensive end for my team. I’ve put in a lot of repetitions over the summer, just in the gym until I don’t get it wrong.”
