The On3 Top 300 is being updated on Monday, and the rankings shuffling brought with it the news that LSU’s pair of five-star commitments both stayed put with their ratings.

Neville offensive tackle Zalance Heard checked in at No. 14 overall, while Catholic High wide receiver Shelton Sampson Jr. moved up to the No. 20 overall prospect. Both committed to the Tigers ahead of their senior seasons.

Now, there’s a new name sitting behind the pair as the third-highest ranked LSU commitment on On3.

Baltimore’s Dashawn Womack moved up to No. 28 overall, now checking in on On3 as the No. 5 edge rusher in the 2023 class and the No. 1 prospect in Maryland.

Behind Womack’s rise in the rankings

After watching multiple games this season of Womack, On3 Director of Scouting and Rankings Charles Power is even higher on Womack than prior to the start of his senior year.

Womack entered the month of September as the No. 53 overall prospect in the country, but he has since moved up to the No. 28 overall recruit. On3 currently has only expanded to 23 five-stars, but with a goal of 32 five-stars by the end of the recruiting cycle, the LSU commitment has put himself well within striking distance of becoming

“Womack has put together some strong showings while playing a national schedule at Baltimore St. Frances Academy,” Power said. “The 6-foot-4, 245-pounder was virtually unblockable against DeSoto (Texas) High, one of the Lone Star State’s top program. Womack’s ready-made size, plus athleticism (laser timed 4.76 second 40-yard dash) and pass rush polish give him one of the highest floors top top EDGE prospects.”

NFL Comparison

On3 compares Womack’s style of play to former UTSA and current Baltimore Ravens edge rusher David Ojabo.

“Da’Shawn Womack’s size, verified athleticism and natural feel as a pass rusher reminds us of David Ojabo. Womack is more developed as the same stage, as Ojabo began playing football later in his high school career.”

St. Frances coaching staff blown away by Womack

Womack’s rankings rise puts him as the No. 5 edge rusher in the 2023 cycle, which moves the St. Frances product into the same range as a number of the other talented defensive lineman to come out of Baltimore in recent years.

For head coach Massey Hailemariam, Womack is as good as it gets.

“We’ve had some incredible edge guys, right? Started with Eyabi AnomaChris BraswellDemon ClowneyDerrick Moore. You take each of all of their good gifts or great gifts, intangibles and put it all together, that’s Womack,” Hailemariam told On3 this month. “He’s everything. He’s athletic, big. Has an unbelievable future in the game. He’s learning how to be a leader. He’s embraced this platform, opportunity. I see nothing but greatness for him.”

Rankings shuffling still to come for the 2023 class

The senior season is a pivotal evaluation point in On3’s rankings process. The final prep season proves to be among the best indicators of ability as a college football player, manifested by the NFL Draft. On3 has reviewed a considerable amount of video, including an extensive number of full high school games in formulating this update.

We’ve also begun tracking production with the understanding that it’s still early in the season and some prospects have played fewer games than others. Movement in this update represents an early snapshot of what we’ve seen so far this fall. The following update will also focus heavily on the remainder of the season.

It is important to understand that the nature of recruiting rankings lends to residual movement of prospects whose ratings remain unchanged. While there are dozens of prospects who actively rose or fell, the majority of On300 members did not see their rating change.

Our goal is to assess a prospect’s long-term potential in college football, as manifested by the NFL draft. We now have 23 prospects rated as five-stars and will finish with 32 five-stars every cycle.
