East Lansing, Mich. Michigan State redshirt freshman linebacker Quavian Carter entered the transfer portal on Tuesday, SpartanMag.com has learned.

Carter – a native of Camilla, Ga. – did not appear in a game this fall due to injury. He redshirted his true freshman season in 2022.

A former three-star recruit, Carter committed to Michigan State on June 12, 2021, over offers from Penn State, Michigan, Tennessee, Ole Miss and Cincinnati, among others. He was the No. 682 overall prospect, No. 59 safety and No. 69 player from Georgia in his class, per the 2022 On3 Industry Rankings.

The 6-foot-3, 200-pound Carter was teammates with current Michigan State defensive back Malcolm Jones at Leesburg (Ga.) Lee County High School.

Michigan State now has 11 players in the portal: linebacker Jacoby Windmon, cornerback Charles Brantley, tight end Maliq Carr guard Geno VanDeMark, linebacker Quavian Carter, defensive end Khris Bogle, defensive tackle Dre Butler, wide receiver Sebastian Brown, defensive tackle Derrick Harmon, punter Michael O’Shaughnessy and defensive end Zion Young.

Michigan State transfer portal updates

Prior to Carter’s entry, Michigan State’s pool of portal players had lowered to 10 due to a flurry of moves dating back to Dec. 20. Former Spartan tight end Evan Morris (Central Florida), running back Jordon Simmons (Akron), offensive guard Kevin Wigenton (Illinois) and defensive back Justin White (Division II Davenport) all found new homes that day.

Wigenton entered the portal on Dec. 4. He earned six starts at right guard this fall, splitting time with fellow redshirt sophomore Geno VanDeMark.

Morris entered the portal on Dec. 8 after appearing in every game for Michigan State this fall. The former kickoff specialist totaled four receptions for eight yards as a block-first tight end for the Spartans.

Simmons entered the portal on Oct. 9. He led the team in rushing in 2020 and started the Peach Bowl in 2021 but fell out of the playing group over the next two seasons.

White, who transferred to Michigan State from Division II Colorado Mesa in 2020, stepped away from the team on Sept. 30. He officially entered the transfer portal on Nov. 1. White played in every game for the Spartans in 2021. He played in eight games during the 2022 campaign before missing the rest of the season due to suspension.

Those four commitments, along with wide receiver Jaron Glover’s withdrawl from the portal on Dec. 21, dropped the number of Michigan State players in the portal to 10. Carter’s entry on Tuesday bumped it back up to 11.
