Michigan State freshman quarterback Sam Leavitt plans to enter the NCAA transfer portal, according to a report from Matt Zenitz. Leavitt played in four games for the Spartans this season. He will have four years of eligibility remaining after choosing to redshirt his freshman season in East Lansing.

The West Linn, Ore., native completed 15 passes on 23 attempts for 139 yards and two touchdowns this season. Leavitt also threw two interceptions in back-to-back games.

The 6-foot-2, 200-pound quarterback was rated a four-star prospect out of high school, according to the 2023 On3 Industry Rankings. Originally committed to Washington State, Leavitt flipped his pledge to Michigan State shortly after an official visit to East Lansing.

On3 rated Leavitt significantly higher than the other three recruiting sites. Leavitt was ranked the No. 76 recruit in the country, the No. 7 quarterback prospect and the No. 1 player in Oregon, according to the 2023 On3 Rankings.

Leavitt—who joined the Michigan State program as a summer enrollee—saw limited game action through the first six games of the season. Following an injury to quarterback Noah Kim, and the promotion of Katin Houser to starter, Leavitt saw snaps in three games as the backup.

Houser also announced his intention to enter the transfer portal on his social media accounts this afternoon.

Should Leavitt and Houser commit elsewhere, Michigan State would be down to two rostered quarterbacks: Noah Kim and walk-on Andrew Schorfhaar. Leavitt and Houser have yet to officially enter the portal and could still return to the Spartan program.

Note: Per NCAA rules, the college football transfer portal opens on Dec. 4 for most student athletes. However, graduate students and players in programs who have fired their head coaches are currently able to enter the portal.
