A second member of the 2023 defensive line class for Mississippi State is hitting the portal this year.

After Jonathan Davis entered the transfer portal earlier this year, Caleb Bryant is following suit as the redshirt freshman announced his decision on Twitter. Bryant was in the middle of spring practice but will be looking for a new school to play in 2024.

The Vicksburg native was a former Utah commitment before deciding to come to MSU and he also had offers from Oregon, Memphis and Southern Miss among others. He decommitted from The Utes around the start of his senior year and would choose State in December.

The 6’3, 265-pounder played for Vicksburg High School where he was named to the Clarion Ledger Dandy Dozen list after he made 78 tackles with 14.0 tackles for loss and 11.0 sacks as a junior and 46 tackles, 16.0 TFL and 9.0 sacks his sophomore year.

His senior year production would earn him a spot on the Mississippi roster for the MS/AL All-Star game and he was a player that defensive line coach David Turner had spoken highly of regarding young defensive linemen.

The Bulldogs still have edge rusher Joseph Head and defensive tackle Gabriel Moore remaining from that class of talented instate players, but the group has quickly dwindled. For spring practices, Turner added JUCO defensive lineman Ashun Shepphard from East Mississippi Community College in this year’s signing class along with Gulfport’s Kai McClendon and North Carolina’s Kedrick Bingley-Jones, Auburn’s Wilky Denaud and Purdue’s Sulaiman Kpaka from the transfer portal.

The coach also has Holmes County Central’s Terrance Hibbler and Tallahassee native Josaiah Knight coming in during the summer as reinforcements.
