Observations from Oregon's 10th spring practice
The Oregon Ducks were back in the Moshofsky Center on Thursday as the weather in Eugene continues to be less than ideal for football conditions.
During the 20-minute portion that was open to reporters, the Ducks did not break out into the “fastball” 11-on-11 drills that they have during the past two practices. So, there isn’t much to report in the way of first- and second-unit rotations.
But we saw some meaningful reps from the offense, defense, and special teams following the warmup and stretching period.
It is worth noting that receiver Kris Hutson did not participate in practice. He was seen on the sideline, not in uniform, but was not working with the group of injured/limited players.
As it typically does, Oregon began practice with some special teams work. Seven McGee, Chase Cota, and Josh Delgado were among a group of players working on punt return ball security. During that drill, they fielded punts with boxing gloves on.
Oregon’s running backs and quarterbacks also worked on ball security, with Dan Lanning and a handful of other coaches attempting to strip the ball from them.
The most eye-catching aspect of the portion of practice that was open to reporters came near the end of the day. Oregon broke into a drill in which a quarterback dumped a swing pass to a running back, who then worked with a receiver to beat two defenders.

On Jay Butterfield’s first rep, he hit Sean Dollars with a pass and Dollars made one nice cut upfield to beat one defender, and then slipped past another after Chase Cota put a good block on him. Later in the drill, Isaah Crocker also delivered a very good block on Jaden Navarrette.
Bryan Addison put a massive, massive hit on Aaron Smith, which drew an emphatic reaction from Oregon’s defensive players on the sideline
Injury notes
On the injury front, there were no new additions to the group of players who have been sidelined this spring. That group remained as it was on Tuesday, and included:
- Daymon David
- Brandon Dorlus
- Popo Aumavae
- Keyon Ware-Hudson
- Dontae Manning
- Justin Flowe
- Bram Walden
- Michael Wooten
- Cam McCormick
Manning, who was seen leaving Saturday’s practice in a wheelchair, was seen with a large brace on his left knee. That was also the case on Tuesday. Manning went through warmups and appeared to be moving relatively well.
