17 days until Texas Football: Savion Red and J’Mond Tapp

We’ll also look back at other greats to wear that day’s number, with special reverence to some of Texas’ best. 

Today is 17 days until kickoff. No. 17 for the Longhorns this season will be worn by Savion Red, a sophomore running back, and J’Mond Tapp, a redshirt freshman EDGE.

Red played in nine games last season, hauling in six passes for 34 yards. He transitioned from wide receiver in spring 2023 and was a member of the Big 12 Commissioner’s Roll (fall 2022).

Tapp saw action in two games as a true freshman last year, recording one tackle against the Louisiana-Monroe and a quarterback hurry against UTSA. He was a member of the Big 12 Commissioner’s Honor Roll (fall 2022).

Recent player to wear No. 17: Cameron Dicker

Dicker (the Kicker) played in 49 career games in his four years on the 40 Acres and scored the most points by a place-kicker in school history (386 points) and racked up the third-most points among any position in program history. He is Texas’ career leader in field goals made (60) and attempted (79), fourth in program history in career field goal accuracy at 75.9 percent (60-for-79) and second all-time in UT history in extra points made (206) and attempted (210).

Dicker made 70 consecutive extra point attempts between 2020-21, the fourth-longest streak in Texas history. He was a semifinalist for the Ray Guy Award in 2021, the same season he was selected first-team All-Big 12 as a punter in 2021. He was a two-time All-Big 12 selection (2018 Second Team, 2020 Second Team). He also announced his presence with authority in the 2018 Red River Shootout.
