Inside Texas is putting a new twist on long-time photographer Will Gallagher’s time-honored countdown to Texas football kickoff. In addition to Will’s great pictures, the Inside Texas staff will go through every player on the roster by jersey number and offer a season outlook on each, from five-star to walk-on.

We’ll also look back at other greats to wear that day’s number, with special reverence to some of Texas’ best.

Today is 29 days until kickoff. No. 29 for the Longhorns this season will be worn by Carson Marshall, a sophomore walk-on defensive back, and Ky Woods, a sophomore walk-on running back.

Ky Woods season outlook

Tashard Choice has stocked the Texas running back room with high end talent since arriving in Austin, with CJ Baxter and Tre Wisner as the most recent examples. There were also talented players in the room when Choice arrived like Bijan Robinson and Roschon Johnson.

Not every player Choice works with or recruits is a Bijan, a Roschon, a Baxter. There are prospects every cycle with offers from various schools who instead take the walk-on route. One of the more talented walk-ons Choice is able to work with is Woods.

Woods was ranked as a three star prospect out of League City’s Clear Springs High School. Even with offers from Air Force, Dartmouth, and Tulane, Woods walked on at Texas to be a Longhorn with the 2022 season being his first at UT.

Woods didn’t play, but he did make a splash on television during the spring game.

As the video reveals, Woods has real burst. He may not play much if at all this season. But he will provide a great challenge during the course of game prep for the first-team defense. That’s the minimum Choice can expect from Woods, who rushed for 2773 yards and 33 touchdowns on 6.7 yards per carry during his three-year varsity career.

Recent player to wear No. 29: Sheroid Evans

Evans played in 33 career games and made four starts and racked up 27 tackles in his career with four pass breakups. Evans overcame multiple ACL tears in his career and did not play in a game from 2013 until the 2016 season opener where he picked up his first career start. He was a two-time member of the Big 12 Commissioner’s Honor Roll.
