Texas linebacker Anthony Hill was named a freshman All-American by the Football Writers Association of America on Tuesday. Hill, a 6-foot-3, 234-pounder from Denton (Texas) Ryan, was ranked as the No. 16 overall prospect in the 2023 On3 Industry Ranking.

Hill tallied 67 tackles, 8.0 TFLs, 5.0 sacks, two pass breakups, and one forced fumble during his debut season. He appeared in all 14 games, starting his career as an understudy to David Gbenda at Will while playing in a specialized role that showcased his best talents. As the season went on, he became more and more comfortable in playing defense and was a centerpiece in the starting lineup. He started six games for the Longhorns.

Hill’s presence on the FWAA freshman All-American team marks three straight seasons where a Longhorn was tabbed as one of the top freshman players in the nation. In 2022, left tackle Kelvin Banks was selected. He followed a 2021 selection of wide receiver Xavier Worthy. Hill became the 16th to make the team in school history, joining names like Malik Jefferson, Earl Thomas, Colt McCoy, Brian Orakpo, Frank Okam, Rod Wright, and Derrick Johnson.

During Texas’ week two win over Alabama, Hill recorded two of his five sacks against Crimson Tide quarterback Jalen Milroe. One of those sacks marked Alabama’s final offensive play of the game.

Hill has received other honors including freshman All-American status from ESPN and The Athletic. He was a finalist for the Shaun Alexander freshman of the year award, and shared Big 12 defensive freshman of the year accolades.
