On the latest episode of the Deep Dive, Paul Wadlington and Ian Boyd assess how early games for Texas, Oklahoma, and Texas A&M may tell the tale of how each respective team’s 2024 season goes.

They highlight the significance of the early season game against Michigan, detailing the challenges Texas will face, particularly against Michigan’s strong defensive and offensive lines. They then explain Michigan’s physicality, their smashmouth approach, and how their new head coach Sherrone Moore, formerly the offensive line coach, will maintain their physical identity.

Next is other challenges Texas will face, particularly in their offensive and defensive lines, and the importance of key players like DJ Campbell and Hayden Conner stepping up.

The two look at how Texas might defend the Wolverines’ smashmouth offense in a physical matchup before diving into how RPOs might be the key to success for Quinn Ewers and the offense. Running backs, both carrying the ball and catching it out of the backfield, will make a difference. If Texas finds success in Ann Arbor, it portends well for the rest of the year.

Oklahoma is next and a discussion follows on the Sooners’ potential readiness to handle defensive blitzes and overloads with new quarterback Jackson Arnold when they face Auburn. The OU defense is talked about, particularly Brent Venables’ recruiting success and defensive vision, including key players like Billy Bowman and Danny Stutsman, and their aggressive blitzing style. The discussion centers on expecting to learn a lot about the Sooners from their matchup with Tigers.

Finally, the Aggies. Boyd and Wadlington analyzes the matchup between Notre Dame and Texas A&M, focusing on Notre Dame’s strong defensive line and corners, and Texas A&M’s new offensive system and key player Connor Weigman. They talk about how Texas A&M can leverage Connor Weigman’s efficiency and strategic running plays to counter Notre Dame’s strong defense. The weather will play a role in early September and will determine much about A&M’s fortunes under Mike Elko.
