Who says this time of year is dead?

Texas Baseball

Texas gets swept by Arkansas yet is still No. 1 according to D1 Baseball. The Horns still hold a two-game lead in the SEC.

Hockey

I know the interest in hockey on this board is pretty tepid but if you’re a Texan and don’t have a team it should be the Stars by default. They showed a ton of grit in defeating the Colorado Avalanche in seven wild games. Down 2-0 in the third period on Sunday, Dallas was powered by recently acquired Mikko Rantanen, who was drafted and played nearly 10 years for the Avs. Rantanen scored two to tie it up before punctuating with an empty netter as the Stars won 4-2.

The Stars now get the Winnipeg Jets who themselves survived a wild 7-game series over the St. Louis Blues. Dallas’ best defenseman, Miro Heiskanen, returns as does leading goal-scorer Jason Robertson.

I want Dallas to win it all in general, but a couple of months ago Justin asked me to put $100 on the Stars to win the Stanley Cup. At 9-1 I couldn’t resist making the same bet.

I almost want to text WAT to see if he’s still alive after celebrating that series win.

Basketball

I know nothing about the NBA but catching up on highlights this A.M. it looks like the Rockets are still too young as they got ran out of their own gym by the Warriors in Game 7. Had the Rockets won, we would have wondered if the Warriors were too old. I saw a stat, shots contested by Draymond Green were 3-17. So he’s still got it.

I saw another stat where the Cavs made only 9 threes and that was their lowest total of the season. Times really have changed. I checked the box score and they were 9-38. Holy s***. The Pacers were 19-36 from beyond the arc. I knew basketball has changed but those are eye opening numbers to me.

This made me think about Sean Miller’s first season at Texas. In looking at the parts he’s assembled there seems to be a high beta in what the team can achieve. Absent a pure scorer, it seems they’ll have to share the ball to create scoring opportunities. I’d rather see that than 30 three-pointers being launched. If they go in it doesn’t matter but it’s not as much fun to watch.

Kentucky Derby

I wonder who my friend @Whirlaway picked to win it. I went with Sovereignty, who held off the favorite Journalism, solely because of the name. Ha ha.

It was a great race. You’d expect that given every horse was from Secretariat’s line.

Golf

Scottie Scheffler went wire-to-wire to win The Byron Nelson, where he made his PGA tour debut in 2014. He just didn’t win the tournament, he crushed everyone as he went -31, tying the previous tour record low. He took an 8-stroke lead into Sunday after rounds of 61-63-66.

After a final round 62, Jordan Spieth finished fourth at -19. Could he make a run at the PGA in a couple weeks?

MLB

Astros and Rangers fans can agree—not really worth talking about.
