USC added a big piece to its 2024 recruiting class in the form of four-star linebacker Dylan Williams.

USC jumped to the front in the race for the 6-foot-2, 191-pound linebacker when the Trojans offered during their Elite Prospect Day back in January. At the time, Williams said he was close to making an immediate commitment.

The Trojans continued working on Williams and ultimately landed his public commitment on Monday morning.

Williams is verbal commitment No. 3 for USC’s 2024 recruiting class. He checks in as the No. 167 overall prospect and No. 15 linebacker in the 2024 On3 Consensus.

He joins Long Beach Poly teammate and wide receiver Jason Robinson as well as cornerback Aaron Butler. All three are four-star prospects and firmly inside the 2024 On300 Rankings.

WeAreSC’s Scott Schrader caught up with Williams, who went in-depth on why he decided to commit to USC over the weekend.

Williams’ Position Fit at USC

As a sophomore at Poly, Williams finished the 2021 season with 48 tackles, two sacks and a fumble recovery returned for a touchdown.

Williams said the USC coaches see him as a Mike linebacker in this defense.

“When you hear Mike ‘backer, you think of a guy just standing in the middle of the defense,” Williams said after receiving his offer from USC. “But in this defense, he covers tight ends, slot receivers, blitzes, comes off the edge. You need size and speed and agility.”

The Commitment Impact

Williams is a big name in the 2024 class and a prospect that can take on a leadership role there. Outside of getting a quarterback committed, it would be tough to do better than this trio in terms of early commitments becoming lead recruiters.

When Long Beach Poly produces great players, it’s important that USC is there to scoop them up. Robinson and Williams will be two of the best to come through there in recent seasons.

When Williams visited USC in March, he said the pitch from USC head coach Lincoln Riley was strong.

“How much it was important for me to stay home and come make USC great again,” Williams said then. “That’s what they’re going to do, to start rebuilding USC — getting guys like me.”
