Game Notes
* USC announced Sunday’s game as a sellout and there’s a pretty clear reason why. All eyes will be on the Trojans’ bench for this one, as true freshman Bronny James is expected to make his season debut. USC head coach Andy Enfield announced this week that James is on track to see the first minutes of his Trojans’ career provided he can get through Friday’s practice and both he and doctors feel good about participating in the game. James is roughly five months removed from suffering cardiac arrest during a team workout over the summer. He was cleared to return to basketball activities by his doctors in late November and participated in his first full practice earlier this week. If available, James will come off the bench and be on a minutes restriction on Sunday. But USC needs depth at guard and James can provide defensive help and a competent offensive player as a shooter and passer.
* Long Beach State is coming off an 88-66 win at home vs. Life Pacific on Dec. 6. LBSU has a win at Michigan, 94-86, and has won its last three games.
* Redshirt senior forward Josh Morgan has made 20 of his first 27 shots this season (74.1 percent). Morgan will be facing his old team in this one. He was named the Big West Defensive Player of the Year as a freshman for Long Beach State during the 2019-20 season. He averaged 8.4 points, 6.1 rebounds and 2.5 blocks per game. His 80 blocks set a school record.
* Gonzaga shot 52.3% from the floor against USC the last time the Trojans took the court. That’s just the fourth time in the past two seasons USC allowed its opponent to connect on 50% or more of its field goals. The Trojans finished No. 8 in the nation last season in opponent shooting percentage. USC is No. 130 this year, allowing 41.6% shooting.
* This is a veteran Long Beach State team that returns all five starters from last season as well as more than 75% of its scoring and rebounding, and more than 90% of its blocked shots.
