In those days there was always the cast of characters being bandied about, and his name was in it, but never thought too seriously. Bob McKillop, Seth Greenberg, Pat Kennedy were also often mentioned. And I thought about this recently: if PJ left right after the Michigan State loss in '94, would we have hired Blaney? I know he was pals with the then A.D.; also recall he wanted out of Holy Cross and "showed interest" in Iona, but they had no interest in him.

Pat Kennedy was the first favorite and I was disappointed when he said no. After that the search became a huge mess as I remember, with me hoping just about every rumored name was not gonna get our job. When I read in the Record (Jon Rowe, great SHU reported back then imo) that Blaney was gonna be the guy, I thought Rowe had to be dead wrong...was on the ground floor of Port Authority, just off my bus to NYC, grab the paper and read the article and could not believe we could possible replace PJ with Blaney.

Always wondered if PJ left earlier if we got either Gillen or Willard Sr. PJ's timing really hurt is.

Didn’t Raveling get into a car accident and have to retire from coaching that summer? What a disaster that would have been having to do two searches in one offseason with the one search being as much of a disaster as it was.
