RIR George.Much different landscape back then—but weird to think we almost stole a coach from USC.
Oh, I know we went after him. A friend of mine (SHU grad) lives in SoCal told me at the time USC fans would rejoice if we hired him.![]()

Perhaps a poor choice of words--didn't mean to imply anything nefarious, just that most would be quite surprised today if coach of USC left for SHU.RIR George.
But I never saw that as theft on our part.
Would have loved to have Raveling as HC because he was a great recruiter.Blaney nice guy but past his prime.![]()

Pat Kennedy was the first favorite and I was disappointed when he said no. After that the search became a huge mess as I remember, with me hoping just about every rumored name was not gonna get our job. When I read in the Record (Jon Rowe, great SHU reported back then imo) that Blaney was gonna be the guy, I thought Rowe had to be dead wrong...was on the ground floor of Port Authority, just off my bus to NYC, grab the paper and read the article and could not believe we could possible replace PJ with Blaney. In those days there was always the cast of characters being bandied about, and his name was in it, but never thought too seriously. Bob McKillop, Seth Greenberg, Pat Kennedy were also often mentioned. And I thought about this recently: if PJ left right after the Michigan State loss in '94, would we have hired Blaney? I know he was pals with the then A.D.; also recall he wanted out of Holy Cross and "showed interest" in Iona, but they had no interest in him.
Sept of 94Didn’t Raveling get into a car accident and have to retire from coaching that summer? What a disaster that would have been having to do two searches in one offseason with the one search being as much of a disaster as it was.
