Wait. So he was fired for a reaction to a racist picture?

He hadn’t read the script and was probably truly caught off guard.

If any thing the station is more responsible than he is for not vetting the BBC dj.

The anchorman laughed and made a comment probably out of pure nervousness; he then realized how that probably came across and sincerely apologized.

People suck now a days. They make snap judgments and sadly stick with them.

He shouldn’t have been fired. He should have been reprimanded and potentially suspended.

Now he has to find a new job and potentially a new career. Because of an off guard reaction. Glad there are so many perfect and well-tempered. Riiiight....

Every show like that has show prep. They dont just throw crap at you. He had to at least know what the picture was and he most definitely had to know the baby of the royal family was bi-racial. I don't think it is too hard to expect a man with 30 years of experience to have the awareness to not condone, support or give the illusion that calling anyone of African descent a monkey is ok or reference the guy who did as "your favorite DJ".


The same people on here attempting to exonerate Lee Cruise from ANY wrongdoing are the same ones who are so quick to convict unarmed black men of wrongdoing in attempt to justify excessive force and the shooting of unarmed black men gunned down in cold blood. It is wildly inconsistent, yet predictable af.

Racism upsets me as much as anyone, but him losing his job over a moment of weakness/reaction in which he quickly apologized sincerely for, is a bit much.

Suspend him, but fire him? Come on. He didn't react appropriately to a story in which he wasn't even involved in.

And I do agree he didn't react appropriately. Not about society being "soft" or whatever. He did indeed screw up and should have apologized, which he did, and I did believe the apology.

The repercussions in this case were just too much IMO.

He’s human. I’ve seen people 25 into their careers make mistakes. It happens. I’m not going to defend him. But I won’t overly condemn him either. People truly do make mistakes. And since I don’t know him personally? I can’t really state his motives.

Now as far as your second paragraph is concerned, that’s kind of a haphazard correlation. Regardless, I think I can condemn such actions and still think this guy is not a racist.

Where did I say Lee Cruise is a racist? Also, the 2nd paragraph isnt a haphazard correlation... its an inconvenient one.

For the 3rd time, he should have solely been suspended. When I was 21 i got suspended at a job for doing something stupid. Sure I apologized and my employer forgave me.... but I still had to serve the suspension.

And he served it and to save face they axed a man 30 years into his career. When the real wrongdoer is the producer who didn’t vet this DJ whom, as I’ve seen, was kind of known for this behavior. I mean. Private organization- they can fire him because they hate his tie. Free market and such.

And what I meant was that’s kind of a loose correlation. Just because some people don’t think Lee was wrong doesn’t mean they are the same kind of people that condone shooting unarmed black people. That’s a bit of a jump.

Depends on what it was costing WLEX. I tend to agree a suspension was fine---- but if what my best friend, who is a producer at WLEX for multiple shows stated was true, that they had advertisers cramming the phone lines threatening to withdrawal their ads, then it is what it is. When business have their bottom line effected it changes things. Is it fair? No. But its the reality of the situation.

Yeah. Business is business, but I would be curious to see just what kind of impact it was truly having.

I mean, he screwed up, but I, for one, don't think his actions were so egregious and appalling given the subject matter and situation, that it should have warranted some sort of massive advertiser reaction.

Would be interesting to see the numbers.

It’s cases like these where I just roll my eyes.
Guy now is out on his backside due to one incident. If I fired every employee under my watch for one incident (that isn’t murder, assault, or willful/sincere discrimination) I’d be out of employees and word would spread where no one would want to work for us.

It’s all about sincerity. Something severely lacking in today’s society made up of hollow, vain, people that are only interested in appearance and lip service.

I know Lee Cruse and consider him a really good guy. Far from a racist and a big heart. That said, this isn't a "PC" issue. He made light of a photo depicting a black child as a monkey. I believe him when he says it was an error made unwittingly, and most of us have probably done something similar in the past without paying a harsh price. I feel like a strong suspension would have been the better way to go, but I don't think people should be writing this off as "political correctness." WLEX is a business based on the public trust. It had to do something.

WLEX did do something, then they did something extra that will certainly not help their business.

It will be turned now to say that anyone that supports his apology is racist and that just shows the white privilege of this country, and something about 100 years ago, vaudeville...something something.

You can't win on these issues. A suspension was warranted, etc...but theres no reasoning on logic on anything

I don’t think many, if anyone, are arguing that they didn’t have to do anything. They did. People are saying that it’s really dumb that they went as far as to fire him. Wildly disproportionate punishment compared to what he actually did and how he owned up to it.

Political correctness may not be the right word, but outrage culture is. If you make a mistake these days in the public sphere, best believe social media will make it hurt as badly as possible.

To me this is like lack of institutional control for a ball coach. Cruse should have known what he is commenting on...because he didn't and instead said something insensitive and stupid that he probably wouldn't have otherwise said, he should have been fired. Fired for ignorance, not for racism.

That said, our world is way too freaking sensitive now and people don't have respect for one another or their differences- this is all races. There are racists on both sides of the fence...
