I’m just curious because multiple people have said that and I don’t know why people are saying it.
Ok, here’s why I think it:
Generally as a rule, I think college coaches would prefer the NFL. I say this as a high school coach/teacher who’s had the chance to meet roughly a few dozen assistants from the range of top 25 programs (including Penn State). If you get to talking to them in small talk while walking around the building or at practice, they all have mentioned the NFL to varying degrees. Some are just waiting on the call, some haven’t but have been offered QC jobs and are mulling it, but I’ve never had one tell me they’ve turned it down. Not one.
They’ll tell you the NFL demands 1/10 the work of college coaching, and the actual work is coaching. It’s not making sure everyone is in class or hoping Joey doesn’t get into another fight. It’s X and O, and a little scouting pre-draft. You don’t even really have to make practice schedules, the Union sets that. It was always the case, and now the portal just makes it worse.
Back to Day. I believe he’s an NFL head coach offer away from being an NFL head coach, and I believe it’ll be here sooner than later. I would say even a little more likely than Kirby or Saban in his final years because I think those guys do get a like bit bigger keys to the castle. Kirby can go 5 years before the seat even gets warm now. In 3 years with no title, Day will be back to pre-title hot seat. He’s not an alum, I don’t think they particularly care for his attitude, etc. He’s also been in the NFL, which matters to people, and folks will correctly surmise that a forward thinking offensive coach is more valuable than a forward thinking defensive coach at that level.
