Insiders are telling me GMac to Syracuse and Hodgson to Providence.

We'll see.
That all seems plausible, at least from the outsider's point of view. I hadn't really been too aware of McNamara being at Siena before this March, but I guess Syracuse would be striking while the iron is hot. At a place that now has a pretty tough time selling itself, McNamara should be able to present a pretty compelling and emotional pitch to recruits, and maybe he'll help raise a few bucks to help himself, too.

Hodgson clearly seems like a comer, and he should get to pick a pretty good job, and Providence is one of those. Great fan base and well funded. I expect he will turn them around pretty quickly.

Syracuse hiring G Mac feels incredibly similar to us hiring Sha regarding timing and momentum. Sure the elite 8 was more impressive but Siena almost beat a 1 seed Duke. With Cuse having an average NIL game who else are they gonna hire? One of their own is in their backyard (like Sha) and just had a great season.

I’m not arguing whether he’s the right hire or not just that it feels like they kinda have to go in that direction. If you hire someone else who flops and G Mac goes elsewhere its an unbearable amount of egg on face.

Given Hodgson's trajectory to date, I would be surprised if he didn't turn around Providence immediately. At least from what they were this season.

And man it is going to drive the Cuse faithful insane if he chooses Providence over them.

Which would be great for our conference but obviously added competition for SHU.

So a guy who lost a first round game is comparable to a guy who went to the Elite 8?

Geesh. There’s a similar feel to it.

. Both were legendary guards at the schools
. Both served as assistant coaches at the schools when their career ended.
. Both left to take over MAAC programs.
. Both won MAAC tournament and took their teams to the NCAA.
. Both then would return to the school where they played and served as assistant coaches to serve as head coach.

just because one went to the elite 8 and the other did not doesn’t mean there no similarity. The career paths are comparable.

What's the deal with this Hodgson guy? How come he is a hot name? He really hasn't done all that much - only three years as a head coach. Providence can do better.

Certainly not. But let’s put a pin in this one. Because head coaches who have gone to multiple final 4s and won multiple titles get s$$$ on here all the time. And those are the group that deserve benefit of doubt.

You are not wrong on the resume. He’s considered a young up and coming coaching star it seems. Was Nate Oats right hand at multiple stops. Took Arkansas State over and got them to the dance quickly. Then immediately turned USF around. That’s what he is such a hot name IMO.

Question is, would Sha still be the only choice at Seton Hall without the Elite 8 run? If they lost in 1st round would we have considered other canidates?

If I recall, there weren’t many other realistic candidates. Grasso from Bryant was a name but that would have turned out bad. Andy OTool was another name. As soon as Sha won that first game in the tournament, it was over.

I think he was basically the choice once he made the tournament. The run was just icing on the cake.

Hodgson is most likely a done deal but one thing could change that. If UNC fires Hubert then Hodgson becomes the front runner for UNC. He may drag this out just a little just in case. That info is from a well connected Providence grad who is close to the AD.

Providence was hit and miss on the coaching front for a while, unlike Xavier who basically hit repeat home runs for decades until Travis Steele (who is now turning his career arc around).

But part of the Providence fan complex — and there is no rival on that in the BE — is the notion that the good coaches never stay there. Pitino left for the Knicks. Barnes and Gillen for the ACC. Then Cooley for Gtown.

Much, much more. Their fanatic fan base donates circles around ours. They had the 3rd most NIL money last season in the conference per my (trusted) sources.

Their overall giving rate is about twice that as SHU, but is emphasized at the undergraduate level as a priority.

are their Alumni that much more successful and richer then ours? figure our "NYC" working alum's would make some bank over the lil Rhode Islanders
You don’t think they have grads working in New York, as well as being very well represented in Boston? I‘d imagine their alums are beating the schidt out of ours.

It's also a geographic thing. For those who remain in the Providence area, that is the "team". Even though they root for Boston sports by and large, it is "Providence v Everybody" like the T-Shirt. Here, even our diehards have strong allegiances to other pro sports.

Providence had about $10M for NIL last season and word is he's getting a bump in that number at his new position.

The number will dwarf what the Pirates will be able to offer Holloway despite an appreciable bump over what he had last year.

Providence is nearing SJU and UConn numbers. schools that have a rabid fanbase that donates heavily to the school, or in SJU's case a billion dollar benefactor.

Didn’t the number dwarf us this year too?
