Nope. Half the time they don’t even grab the same body part that supposedly had the contact. When was the last time a player was too injured to continue ? How about never. I can’t even remember anyone even limping.

If you’re writhing in pain, you are out…for your own well being (ha ha ha)
Puli played out the rest of the half but then couldn’t go in the second half. Your indiscriminately punitive approach would have had him ejected from the game immediately.

I‘ve been injured in some pretty serious ways and played out games after a few minutes to recover a bit. Broken bones, torn muscles and ligaments.

One of my kids tore his PCL in a game in a collision with the goal keeper and a goal post. He actually played another 5 minutes or so before it became clear he couldn’t keep going and was seriously injured.

I coached a girl who broke her ankle in a game and nobody knew it until after the game. She had gone down after some minor contact but got herself up and said she was fine. She played great and didn’t say a word not exhibited anything about it until after the game.

I’m telling you from direct experience as both a long time player and coach that this stuff is not very easily determined in many cases that occur regularly in games.

Hadnt thought of that. But all contact sports have goons and yet the sports do just fine. The sports police themselves. Fear of Quid pro quo cuts down on that.

I guess it depends how much tolerance one has for flopping whether or not it ruins the sport. To me it does. It truly is amazing how fast these guys recover
Part of the deterrence is the potential quid pro quo on your own better players, and the other is that you would be getting penalized without even being sure you are getting the other team’s player out of the game.

With your idea, you could have a bunch of players take shots that don’t get them kicked out of the game but hopefully cause enough injury to get the other player removed (for example, you are playing Argentina you have 3-4 of your players commit yellow card fouls on Messi that hopefully ding him enough to get him out).

You need to reread @mildone's post or maybe you've just never played a sport. Playing soccer I've been hit or stepped on countless times and they hurt like a mofo, but 1-2 minutes later the pain subsides. Yes there's way too much acting going on but that doesn't mean there aren't plenty of actual painful encounters in every game.
True but how many groan men shout out and cry in pain from getting their foot stepped on or from a trip? Maybe the audible overreaction should by itself result in a yellow.

You clearly don’t watch much soccer.
I watch enough to know that "typically" is too strong a word. It should be mandatory. And you only come back when your team has the throw/corner/goal kick. That way your teammates can't kick it oob and get you back in quickly.

Yep...and you may recall when I broke my thumb in 3 places I kept playing and when I completely tore my rotator cuff (making a diving save at least) I kept playing for another 10 minutes or so before realizing I probably was hurt pretty badly. I don't think some people truly realize how much of a contact sport soccer is.

Cuti Romero wouldn't let that happen for Argentina. He would go all Vinnie Jones on someone if they were to start doing that.

I was out playing disc golf this afternoon, so just watched the replay of this game and they never showed more than a bad angle replay of this play. I thought it might have been in as this pic shows. Very annoying and lack of decent and timely replays is a major problem with the WC courage, IMO.

Almost as annoying was late in the game when Germany went ahead of CR in the other match - the idiot announcer said that meant Spain was out and Germany in which was obviously wrong on goal differential (Spain beat CR 7-0 so was always going to win any ties on GD). She said it several more times and her partner never corrected her and the production crew was obviously asleep at the wheel too. It took almost 5 minutes for them to make the correction.

Colbert Pretty sure I saw a puff of smoke behind a grassy knoll at 3:15. Did you read the FIFA commission report ?
No but according to the medical report that guy was fouled at the ankle, then it went in an 45 degree angle up to his right hand, turned in a downward trajectory off his left hip before moving upward to settle in just below his right shoulder blade. All wounds were determined to be from the same foul.
The ensuing yellow card was found on an extra bench that was stored in the tunnel leading to the locker room.

Maybe someday there will be a Colbert Commission to investigate the Hand of God goal. I personally think a fan threw a rock which deflected the ball away from Maradonna into the net.

Well 2 of my favorite 4 teams made it (US 1, Argentina 4) … other 2 (Germany 2, Denmark 3) were disappointing.

I would challenge anyone calling soccer a wuss sport to try to take a header on goal with a bunch of grown men absolutely wanting to deny that opportunity. Or to run full speed dribbling a soccer ball when another player slide tackles with studs up.

It IS easy to fix. If hurt, you’re out of the game. Fake injuries will cease immediately. Reason no one wants to fix it is because drawing fouls is the best shot at set pieces and goals…for both teams.

Since when ? They never are. They miraculously get up and play on
I agree with you in spirit that the fake rolling around is pathetic. But there isn't a solution that I see outside of perfect refereeing. Even the situations when a guy grabs a seemingly wrong part of the body - pain radiates man - in the moment a broken ankle can feel like a torn up knee. You just know something in the general area has gone bad.

I am not sure what the debate is here or perhaps you dont know the rules as it is basically what you want them to be. There has to be some criteria for when they have to leave the field. The current criteria is if a player goes down with an injury and requires medical attention, he has to leave the field until the trainer decides he is healthy enough to play and the ref let him back on.
How would you have the ref decide what is OK to stay on the field or when they have to leave? Are you suggesting that every player that goes to ground regardless of the severity should have to leave the field? Maybe only if they roll one time? Or if they put their hand to their face?

I do think (as most do) that the overly dramatic rolling around in agony with the hands to the face is undesirable but I think you will struggle to find many incidents of players going to the ground that were not fouled, especially in the WC.

Something to be aware of in the US for tomorrow. DirectTV's contract with FOX sports is expiring tonight at midnight with currently no new deal signed which means bars with DirectTV accounts may not be able to show the US Netherlands game on FOX and FS1.

Wow what a bad day for the contract to end. Bars are going to lose it if they can't show the game.

Really? Happens multiple times per game, like clockwork. No surprise. It should be ridiculed but alas other players want to reserve their opportunity to partake.

Kinda sick watching Uruguan players chasing the refs into the tunnels. Suarez actually showed class for once just sitting and crying. Tough titty. They should have scored more goals.

Could not happen to a better group. Suarez is such a slime ball with actions on/off field (great Player though). I enjoyed watching him cry being on the other side for a change. After his hand ball on goal (red card offense) led to a win over S. Korea with penalty miss it was good to see the karma reversal on late goal by S. Korea (Hwang from Wolves) end it.

As a referee, I am a proponent of rules allowing referees to give yellow cards for players surrounding referees after he/she has asked players for space on the field. We need a precedent to do it.

Imagine how quickly it will stop after numerous players receive yellows. After the game is different in this situation as yellow cards will not move forward but fines should be in order.
