Wright was clearly on the way to a HOF career (prior to the injuries), but Pujols and Trout were working on legendary status. Pujols got there, Trout might be a hair short unless we see a resurgence.
Agree with this- Though, Trout should have enough regardless.

So- let’s go with Stearn’s run protection- first, is there a realistic 1B option who’s run prevention makes up for the hole in the lineup.
second- Let’s say signing Williams allows Diaz to go elsewhere(run prevention???? Hmmmmm- he prevented runs with a crappy defense)
I can get behind the Nimmo trade if everything else ends up making sense.
McNeil, Baty, Acuna, will not play a combined 20 games at 2B. Vientos- is worse run prevention than Pete at 1B…

let’s say Pete and Diaz leave at this point- how do we actually make the team better?

It starts with starting pitching, at least a frontline starter and then another 2-3 spot starter. The starting pitching, excluding McClain, was just so bad the 2nd half of last season, it burnt the bullpen down to the ground.

However, I agree with you. Diaz is a Must sign and I would go 5 years. He seems to have a rubber arm and even if the 5th year is not so good it would have been worth it. As for Pete, he's great for business. Mets can sign some alternative guys who will make up for some of his power, however, would love for the Mets to bring him home and it helps with attendance.

What does a Starting Pitcher have to do with Pete? We need a frontline SP with or without him.
Give me the run protector at 1B whose defense outweighs Pete’s offense and how that makes us a better team.

The Athletic (paywall) ran its annual list of the 10 worst MLB contracts. No Mets were listed, although Sean Manaea made honorable mention. One former Met made it, Javier Baez at #7.

Kris Bryant was #1.

It is odd that one of the greatest players of our era would be on this list, but there was Mike Trout at #3. He has regressed to "merely good", and has five years to regress further. A cautionary tale for a team like the Mets who signs guys to mega-contracts. Better win early in the duration of the contract, because in the back end you don't know what you're going to get

I guess Anthony Rendon's recent buyout might have kept him from qualifying because that was terrible.

What does the board think:

I was watching SNY's Mets Hot Stove, and Todd Zeile made a great point about run prevention. 1B isn't figuring into the equation as much as up-the-middle defense, outfield, and arms (pitching). If defense does figure in, it's more of a talking point to devalue 1B further. How is it that Kyle Schwarber is valued more than Pete when Schwarber doesn't even play the field? Teams are willing to pay Schwarber more and for a longer contract than Pete. Stearns needs to focus on the real run prevention problem rather than devaluing a player who can help your team. IMO, the pitching lab has been a mixed bag, but Stearns is not going to blame himself for his failures to help the team.

FYI: Pete has expressed his willingness to DH, as confirmed by his agent Scott Boras.

Considering we now have elite 2B/SS and Baty also really became pretty good at 3B, CF is the other prime position. And when it comes to the infield- the one thing Pete does do well is scoop balls out of the dirt. And we have shown we can put an elite run preventor out there but they can't hit. Catcher- we have one that is a good defender and one that can hit for power. Don't think there will be much change there. RF will be Soto.

So- you are correct - pitching is priority after getting CF in place. And unless we get a guy like Bellinger- I just don't see how any 1B can make up for Pete's bat with their defense. And the talk of Schwarber makes no sense based on what Stearns is selling us.

Is it a money league? Do you have any further details about the league?

Bad F_ _ king news!!!!! Diaz to the Dodgers. Rumored to be 3 years and $69 million. I can't believe Stearns wouldn't match it. Well Willis!! Please let us know what a genius Stearns is for building a good farm system.

I too can't (and don't) believe that Stearns was unwilling to go 3/$69M. We don't know whether Stearns had the chance to match the offer Maybe Dia just wanted out. TBH, who wouldn't want to go to the Dodgers?

Stearns SUCKS major D***!!!
I bet a large chunk of the money is deferred. It's the only way Diaz fits in without pushing the Dodgers closer to the Cohen tax. Meanwhile, small market Stearns continues to trip over dollars to claim that penny. Oh so helpful in building a championship team.🤬🤬🤬

Stearns is always FAFO. This time he got burned. Only so many times you can bluff your way through life. Stearns is looking more like a fraud each passing day.

Milwaukee continues to win without Stearns. Stearns sat out in Milwaukee in '23 and was with the Mets in '24. Milwaukee didn't miss a beat.

Pete will meet with Boston and Baltimore at the winter meetings while Stearns said the Mets will not. Stearns thinks he's so much smarter the everyone else.

Schwarber signs a 5 year $150 deal with the Phillies. Probably by the end of the day Pete is likely to sign elsewhere. With egg on Stearns face, he'll spin it as if his pitching lab and analytics will still save the day.

I expect a counter move to be announced pretty soon. Whether it's a trade or signing(s).
