It hasn’t even been five seasons since Joe Burrow last suited up for LSU, but the quarterback already has legendary status in Baton Rouge. Burrow made a return to Tiger Stadium on Saturday at the annual spring game, along with several of his teammates from the 2019 national championship team.

The quarterback was accompanied by Ja’Marr Chase, his leading receiver from that season. Burrow and Chase have also teamed up together in the pros, where they helped lead the Cincinnati Bengals to a Super Bowl appearance this past season.

The Tigers went undefeated in 2019, defeating Clemson in the College Football Playoff Championship. Joe Burrow passed for 5,671 yards and 60 touchdowns that year, both of which set single-season records at LSU. Several members of that team went on to NFL careers, including Burrow, Chase, Clyde Edwards-Helaire and Justin Jefferson.

LSU has struggled to remain competitive in the two seasons since its national championship, going just 11-12 since then. The Tigers parted ways with coach Ed Orgeron following the 2021 season, hiring Brian Kelly from Notre Dame as his replacement. Saturday at the spring game was the first chance for Tigers fans to get a look at what they might see from their team in 2022.

It was a high-scoring affair, with the White Team defeating the Purple Team by a score of 59-31. Quarterbacks Garrett Mussmeier, Myles Brennan and Jayden Daniels all saw plenty of playing time, with Nussmeier leading the pack. The redshirt freshman finished the afternoon 9-of-16 passing for 136 yards and a touchdown. Returning junior Tre Bradford led the backfield with 85 yards rushing on just nine carries.

Although the defense gave up a lot of points, it wasn’t all bad on that end either. Cornerback Jay Ward led all players with 10 tackles and a pass breakup, while second-year defensive lineman Maason Smith recorded a pair of sacks. It’s clear both units still have plenty to work on before the start of the season, but it was good to see them back in action.

LSU is set to open the 2022 season on Sept. 4 against Florida State.
