ACC Announces Fine for UNC; School Issues Statement

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (theACC.com) – The Atlantic Coast Conference announced today that the University of North Carolina has been fined for violation of the league’s event security policy at the conclusion of its men’s basketball game versus Duke University on February 7. The conference’s event security policy is designed to protect the safety and well-being of all student-athletes, coaches, officials and fans. In accordance with ACC policy, North Carolina will incur a fine of $50,000 for a first offense. All fines collected under the policy are directed to the Weaver-James-Corrigan-Swofford Postgraduate Scholarship Fund, which benefits ACC student-athletes pursuing graduate education. STATEMENT FROM CAROLINA ATHLETICS "We accept the ACC’s fine for having unauthorized people on the court before Duke and the officials could completely clear the floor on Saturday. The video we have reviewed confirms we followed our protocols to get Duke’s players and bench personnel and the game officials off the floor safely. We will continue to review our protocols to provide the highest measures of safety in the event fans rush the court. We consider this matter closed and look forward to the rest of the season."

Can we do a court storming fundraiser that goes toward defraying penalties incurred due to court storming?

Duke's bball program has always had extreme "I demand to speak to the manager" energy. Also- Is there a statute of limitations for this? If not, Chancellor Roberts could prove he has some loyalty to UNC and demand a similar fine for the well documented, higher volume throwing of bottles and things at the UNC team after we beat them in Cameron in 2024.

I mean, ok seems fair. It was a bit chaotic. UNC hasn't had a court storming for like 10+ years, hard to plan for something you haven't seen in a long time. Oops my bad, pay the fine and move on.

Can’t believe anyone seriously makes this comment. Incredible comeback. Tons of excitement. Let college students be college students. The embarrassing part is thinking the court storm is actually embarrassing. Go tell a college student to act like they’ve been there before. Good grief.

Has dook been fined for anything for all the crap that they do? Just like Swofford and his "disappointing" press release he put out about Carolina back during the AFAM crap, the ACC finds its voice when it comes to punishing the flagship university of this shell of a conference. Without UNC it is nothing and would not have made it this far WITHOUT CAROLINA!!!! Why not put out a release that says NOTHING has been found to indicate anybody was punched. How many times has other ACC teams thrown something and there not been a $50,000 fine?! Let this conference burn and never look back. ACC you are dead...long live the king Carolina.

We can all have our opinion on it. Personally if it can be done safely, I love it. I guarantee those young folks made core memories last night and I'm so happy for it. There is something so wonderful celebrating together, vanquishing your rival a mere eight miles away. Sheer joy. Savor all the good moments you can find in life.

If it wasn’t a buzzer beater they wouldn’t have done it. 100%
